10.1.1. “A man travels the world over in search of what he needs and returns home to find it.” - George Moore

[Follows THIS, THIS, THIS and THIS]

Tim took a slow swig from his beer and watched a bug crawl across the picnic bench towards his foot. It was Sam’s turn to drive next, so Tim was making the most of his break. It had been an abrupt stop this time. Jason having what seemed to be an attack of aggravated claustrophobia at being stuck in the truck for so long. It had been during another one of his silent periods, so it was enough for Tim to know his friend had been stewing internally again over everything. He stopped in a rest area with some picnic tables and a bathroom, at least. May as well kill two birds with one stone.

He looked over to where Jason had parked himself beside the furthest table from the truck. He hadn’t wanted company, although it had been a struggle for Tim when Jason just sat there for what seemed like ever with his face buried in the crook of his arm, unmoving. At least, that’s what he had done until his cell phone finally rang and it was quite obviously his chick. That had been a good twenty minutes ago now; Jason had been speaking to her ever since.

The jury was still out on how Tim felt about that. He didn’t know why he didn’t trust the chick or why he had been so freely ready to think she was the Bitch of the Century. He suspected now, though, that Erin may have seized that crown with Lyla as her Lady in Waiting. He knew Six didn’t hate either women, but there was always going to be a hurt bitterness remaining, just like he harboured towards Tim himself. That was now just part of their friendship dynamic. Jason threw it in Tim’s face regularly, but Tim knew it was just residual hurt that was never really going to go away. J had a temper. Always had done. It was what had made him the best high school Quarterback in the country before the accident. The thing was, he never got angry without reason. There was always a reason.

But there was no sign of that temper right now. For the first time since they had arrived in Jersey, Jason was smiling as he chatted on the phone. He was leant forward in his chair, concentrating on every word she was saying. Thank god she had finally called back. It was then that Tim realised that even though Six was in the truck with them destined for Dillon and home like old times, everything had changed. Jason wasn’t going to remain in Dillon any more than Tim was going to give up beer or become a hairdresser. Dillon was going to be just like this picnic area… a rest stop to recharge before he picked up his kit again and went on with life with that QB determination not to be defeated, just like he always did.

And for the first time in his life, Tim thought he just might like to jump on for the ride.
