It's because intelligence is not the sole or most important measure of a person's worth. Mentally challenged persons are valuable members of society who do hold down jobs and live productive lives.
The best (nicest, serves biggest portions) of the UTA cafeteria people is a MC girl.
The the problem with this is that MOST (not all) babies that are born with grotesque deformities and or retardations WILL NOT function in a normal society. Most will not go on to become valuable persons within society, most will not be able to hold jobs or develope meaningful relationships

I can't really reply to this without speaking in explicitly theological terms. I don't expect them to persuade anyone who isn't already a Christian, but they are important points in understanding my position on any sort of "life issue" Suffice it to say that:
a. I do not regard bodies- including brains- as the be-all and end all of our existence. If you believe that there is such a thing as a soul, then it follows that the soul's condition, and not anything bodily is the most important part of a person's life.
b. I do not think that such a thing as a "defective" human being, at least not at birth.
c. I regard at least a 3rd trimester fetus as a human being due human rights, and it would of course be monstrous to euthanize already living mentally challenged people _without their consent_.
I'll have a full post on life issues up on my LJ eventually. Right now I'm still working on my pro-gay manifesto.
I totally agree. The moment a society starts taking care of the weaker, the society can no longer evolve because they're breeding the weak back into themselves.
You never see a group of gazels falling back to help the slower ones. It's all simply about natural selection.
I agree. I'm one of the people who on getting back a diagnosis of Down's Syndrome or something after the amniocentesis would immediately schedule the abortion. I don't think it's doing any favors to bring a child into the world that's going to be handicapped its entire life, even if there are a number of retarded children who are happy. I won't try to argue with parents who feel differently about their own handicapped children (who think that God sent them a flawed child to test them, or whatever story they tell themselves to make sense of things), I wouldn't be in favor of forcing abortion or euthanasia, but it's my right to refuse to be stuck with one myself.
