It’s Day 7 of
National Novel Writing Month, and since I just returned from a weekend at the
Oregon Shakespeare Festival, I’m behind on my word count. And so my typing should be going towards that or towards the job that pays me so I can write a novel or attend a Shakespeare Festival. But I find that I have other thoughts that want to be written.

Sometimes I also get the yen to ditch everything and do something creative.. but then I remember how draining I find it. ;) Trying to come up with creative output all the time is way harder work for me than Science! and so I think there's a place for both in my life, skewed perhaps towards more routine work.
However one of my very favorite authors of all time was a computer programmer for like, 20 years, before she quit and started writing. So you never know what will happen.

I'm with you on the creative stuff. I think the urge to feel inspired/creative is more fun than the actual execution. Even people who work in creative fields probably end up doing work that feels routine, too. But knowing all of that, sometimes I still end up dreaming about my life being different - specifically, less of my time being spent staring at a screen. :)
