It works!

I don't know why, but my tablet works in GIMP now! Sure, I'd tried again to get it to acknowledge the pressure, but it kept blanking the settings, looking like it didn't take. Today I went to see if I could use the switch or set a key to act like the mouse button so I could at least use it without the pressure-sensitivity, but instead, it worked ( Read more... )

I used to smudge pencil work with my thumb for smooth shading, but my art teacher said it was too unprofessional that way. I'm sure he wouldn't like the tablet feature.

Of course not, professionals use a rolled-up piece of paper. :>

Seriously, I found it a curious take on it, so I went to see what someone who gets paid for pencil work had to say about it (lavender box at the bottom). Her explanation makes enough sense.

Interestingly, a well-respected artist in a forum I was on long ago, posted a tutorial (I think it was his own) for using the smudge tool for paint-like shading (and that worked just fine without the fine control and pressure-sensitivity of a tablet). The funny thing is, IIRC, it gave the impression that this was a technique you could use if you had Painter, when 1: various other programs have smudge tools and did then (I used it just fine in Oekaki), and 2: Painter wasn't short on ways to imitate real paint in the first place.
