I guess gardening is a good sport for me

I know I am a overweight and out of shape, but I do easily carry a 30 pound child around - so I am wondering...why I am I getting such an extreme workout every time I garden? I wake up stiff and feel like I ran a marathon. I threw my back out a few weeks ago and now the problem keeps coming back here and there. Should I see someone? I want to ( Read more... )

I think a lot of that is the bending and squatting motion you do when gardening. It uses muscles we don't normally use. Gardening is actually really good exercise!! I think one thing you might want to consider (if you're not using it already) is using a small stool to sit on when you're weeding or planting, in lieu of squatting or kneeling. Or - if you choose to kneel, get one of those soft kneeler pads. God luck and hope you are feeling less sore!

That's true, up, down, up...that is more than normal. Thank god it's a workout - I need one! And yes, I have the pad and I could do the stool, but I have a huge yard and don't tend to sit still. Now I need to go help hubby!

haha I have the same problem! I also sweat more when I am weeding and planting things than half the time I am running at the gym, it is sort of ridiculous! I agree the kneeler pads help as does taking a break here and there when you are pulling lots of weeds.
