Several months and another lifetime ago, Hiccup had needed a basket of fish and a lot of tricks to get the new tail on Toothless. Now, the dragon sat still for him as he was buckled into the leather saddle and metal spines that connected the tail fin to Hiccup’s left foot pedal. Checking as he went along, Hiccup lingered on the left stirrup. Where ( Read more... )

It's Reynald who notices first, before the dragon's shadow has had a chance to fall over the ground. "Doofus!" he proclaims gleefully, waving his arms in the air at his flying friend. "Fly, Doofus fly!"

Robb follows his son's waving arms, and to his surprise, doesn't feel the apprehension that used to follow the flight of a dragon.

"Wave, Dada!" Reynald demands, and Robb does, one arm lifted in salute to the soaring pair.

Even from above, he could recognize Robb and Reynald and he leaned in the saddle and shifted his foot, indicating to Toothless where he'd like to go. The dragon snorted and hovered down low but refused to land; Hiccup couldn't blame him. If they could stay up, they would. So, circling ever lower, he grinned and waved back.

"Fly!" Reynald demands, and Robb scoops him up onto his shoulders so he's that much closer.

"You made it up!" he calls up with a wide grin. It's hard not to be excited for them; even Toothless looks rather smug and pleased.

"I did!" he shouted back, fighting the urge to add a whoop of glory after his answer. "We did it!"

A whoop of glory, in all fairness, would be completely appropriately placed. "Where are you going to fly to?" he asks, between Reynald squealing and waving his arms in the air. He is so proud of his friend Doofus the Dragon, and the way to show pride is apparently to make a lot of noise.

"It doesn't even matter!" Hiccup shouted, as giddy as his dragon by now. "We're up!"

It's a good point, and it's not like there's all that far they can go. Grey Wind appears out of the trees then, having spotted the dragon and the excitement, and sits back on his haunches to peer up at Toothless and Hiccup as if he's not quite sure whether or not he approves.

Toothless notice Grey Wind first and he flapped his wings and snorted, banking so hard that Hiccup had no choice but to accommodate for the spiral he'd started. "Show off!"

Grey Wind looks unimpressed; Robb nearly sputters with laughter. "I don't think it's quite a fair contest, since only one of them's got wings!"

Hiccup laughed as Toothless finally landed. "Yeah, but you tell him that."

Grey Wind shakes himself as if to say he's not the least bit impressed, but at least he no longer thinks Toothless is an immediate threat to his pack. Robb laughs too, shaking his head. "I don't think it would make a difference."

Toothless snorted and tossed his head, seemingly ignoring Grey Wind to sit in the warm damp sand. Hiccup grinned and shifted over in the saddle to face them. "Stubborn, aren't they?"

Robb is trying to keep from laughing too much, partly because Grey Wind looks a bit put out. Reynald has no such worries, giggling with delight as his little head swivels between direwolf and dragon.

"I think he's secretly happy for you, really," Robb assures him. Bizarrey, he really does.

Toothless watched Reynald for a moment, his head swaying from side to side with his, before he finally stood up and walked over to Grey Wind and smoothed some of the hot white sand with his paws so he could sit next to him.

"I think he knows."

Robb nearly chokes on his own laugh as Reynald announces happily, "All friends!"

"Yes," Robb agrees, because it certainly does look that way. "No matter how little they want to admit it."

Grey Wind, rolling a little to make room (and make sure he isn't accidentally sat on) lets his tail thump, just once, on the sand.

Watching the gesture, Toothless raised his tail a few inches and flapped it into the sand, only to look surprised when he splashed himself.

"Careful, Doofus," Hiccup warned.
