Just a nice safe salt and burn Dean had said as all three brothers stepped inside the rundown looking house, their aim was to find the mourning broach with the ghost's hair inside of it and set it alight to send the restless and dangerous spirit back to rest but as with anything the Winchesters did, nothing was ever that simple: firstly the three ( Read more... )

The faint sound of his name caught his attention, and his head whipped around, a frown marring his face as he turned and headed down the left hallway, instead of the right when the fork in the hallway had been presented to him, his sawed-off loaded and ready. He'd gone been through three different floors already trying to find Sam, as well as some exit. But any door he'd opened had only led to another room or another hallway. It was fucking annoying as shit to be stuck like this. He felt like he was running around blind in a goddamn funhouse or some shit.

"Sam?" Dean called out as he got closer to where the voice, and his name, had come from.

He knew that voice, the one that would yell at him if he missed one can during target practice or that would comfort him if he was injured but right now it seemed like a life line even if it was only calling out one name.

"Dean?" Adam returned his eldest brother's call as he lowered his own shotgun slightly and turned into the corridor that Dean was walking down.

"Sam -- Not Sam .." Dean said, stunned at the sight of his younger half-brother who he distinctly remembered as being really, very dead. "Adam?" He asked, lowering his gun a fraction but no where near a comfortable level. He didn't know what sorta place this was, or what else was here with him. For all he knew this was the thing he'd killed back in Minnesota, the poor kid didn't deserve to go like that. Fucking ghouls.

"Yeah, not Sam." He muttered bitterly under his breath before running a hand through his hair. "Thought I'd lost the both of ya." Adam sighed as he took another step closer. "So where are we Dean?"

With Adam's forward step, Dean took one back, head tilted slightly as he tried to gain some insight into whatever trick this place was pulling over on him. "Why don't you tell me why you're wearin' that kid's face first. What are you, huh? Shifter? 'Nother fuckin' ghoul?"

"Dean it's me." He stated with a confused and annoyed look on his face. "I'm not a shifter and only my mom was a ghoul, you know that you ass-hat. Test me if you don't believe me." Adam angrily pulled up his right sleeve after his slightly heated words.

"Obviously I don't, and I'd know .. I was there. The damn thing got both of you. Found your bodies underground, even gave you a proper send off. All of which I was fucking there for." Dean bit out, glancing down at the kid's bared arm and for a moment he thought the kid might be the real deal -- but he couldn't chance it, not when he didn't know what the hell was going on around here ( ... )

Even though it was a completely different him, Adam felt honored that he was still given a proper hunter's funeral though the thought of being some ghoul's lunch made him shiver slightly.

He hid a grimace when Dean expertly slid the knife across his already scarred skin, allowing the older man to see the proof that he needed to confirm Adam's own words.

"Yeah well, where I'm from I knew how to defend myself. You, Sam, Uncle Bobby and Dad made sure of that."

"Dad?" Dean asked, gaze snapping up to Adam's face, a look of saddened awe crossing his own. "He's alive? Where you're from?" He wanted to believe that he was, that in some other dimension or world or whatever that maybe things hadn't gone completely to shit for their family. It was a fool's thought, he knew, but just maybe.

When he finally let the kid's arm go he grabbed the shotgun he had tucked under his arm and glanced down the hallway on either side of him. Well, since the kid came from that way, might as well go the other.

"C'mon, I don't wanna be standin' around like a goddamn target waitin' to be picked off."

He really didn't want to burst the little bubble of hope that Dean seemed to have at the mention of their father but it was better then lying to his eldest brother.

"Er... no he isn't, you kinda made him train me after you found out me existence." Adam explained as he nervously rubbed the back of his neck as he too took hold of his sawed-off shotgun and followed the older hunter.

"Oh .." He murmured, trying not to let his disappointment show. He knew it was a long shot, at the very least, that their dad would still be alive. Though he was surprise to hear that he'd been the one to suggest the kid start training, start hunting. He didn't really like it, that idea. No one should have to go through the kind of shit they've gone through. No one should need to know that the freaky shit out there is real.

"Right, so, how long you been stuck here? Know anything about this place?" Dean asked as he took off down the hallway.

"About ten minutes I think, so all I know is that this isn't the house we were searching." He confessed as he took a step closer to his brother.

"And Dean, it wasn't as if you up rooted me to 'hunter training camp', you made sure I stayed in school and either you, Dad or Bobby would teach me something on the weekends, lore only and proper survival and weapons training was reserved for the holidays." The slightly shorter man stated as he tried to get the disappointment off of his brother's face.

"Really?" Huh, he had that much foresight? Though he supposed it was kinda what they did with Sam, over the years. Though he was more of a whiny bitch about it half the time. "Well, that's good then. Cuz school's important." Not that he thought so, but whatever. "Good to know I'm still the more awesome brother." Dean said with a tiny grin.

"'Bout as long as I've been here then. Woke up here after crashing in another shit motel, still got my bag too which is kinda weird, but whatever." He said with a shrug. "You'ren not hurt or nothin' are you?" Dean asked, then paused and rolled his eyes, "Well besides where I nicked you, obviously."

"Keep tellin' yourself that." He joked, though in Adam's mind there was some truth in Dean's words about him being the better brother or at least he wasn't as bipolar as Sam was turning out to be. "Nah, the hunt was a run of the mill salt and burn and we'd just arrived so nothing had really happened apart from the three of us splitting up to find the mourning broach."

Dean's grin widened at the others response and then nodded a bit. "Makes sense, though whatever nabbed you and stuck ya here waited for a prime time to do it. Wait until you're split up, then strike. You sure it was just a routine ghost haunt you guys were after?"

"Yeah, random poltergeist terrorizing a couple in their home, nothing special at all." Adam answered with half a shrug knowing that that kind of hunt was normal compared to everything else that was going on.
