Ky was wandering the halls, cautious considering the nature of what he might find, when he saw a sign on one of the doors. He stared at it for a second, trying very hard to figure out how it got there.

Happy Birthday Ky Kiske, it read. Ky felt a little touched by it despite himself. Most of his birthdays over the last fifteen years had gone ( Read more... )

When Ky turned around, he would see a familiar figure standing the doorway, obviously surprised at his presence. When she had been given a note about his birthday, she made a point of putting the dinner together. It had taken a bit of work, not to mention researching into foods from his world, but she hoped it would be a nice gesture, considering he had offered to cook for her if they met again. The only reason she had left at all was in order to change into some more formal attire, not expecting him to come back so soon.

"Oh, you got back early, guess that spoiled the surprise. " she mumbled sheepishly, though still smiling up at him. "Do you like it?"

He smiled broadly back at her, enormously pleased despite himself. He knew he shouldn't be quite this tickled, it wasn't like anyone had any sort of obligation to do anything for his birthday, or that he should want anything done for it.

"It was a very kind thought, although entirely unnecessary." He didn't require anyone to go to any sort of effort at all for his birthday. "And I assure you, it was still a surprise, you merely weren't present for the full effect of it. How did you know?"

"The hotel staff left me a note. I suppose they guessed I would want to do something for you." she smiled back, shutting the door behind her once she was inside the room. No one deserved to have their birthday ignored, so it was the least she could do. She just hoped she hadn't messed up as far as the cooking went.

"I know I didn't have to, but I wanted to." she giggled, moving in close enough to give him a hug, still beaming happily at him, clearly content in seeing that he did like the surprise. "Happy Birthday."

He ducked his head, pleased. Although surprised by the hug he returned it happily. "Thank you." He separated from her, glancing at the table. "It smells delicious."

Really, the thought alone was enough to insure that he would like the food. He'd eaten enough army rations and on occasion been grateful to at least have those that anything cooked and warm was automatically delicious.

"Well I admit I'm not really much of a cook, so hopefully it turned out okay." she replied, moving around him when he let go in order to make sure everything was in place. "Best to eat it before it get cold anyway."

Being royalty, as well as generally being on the road and eating whatever food they served in the inns she stopped at, she didn't have a lot of practical experience with preparing food. Thankfully she had played it safe and went for something simple.

He nodded back, still smiling, as he took a seat at the table. He picked up the glass of wine, examining the label with a shrug. He didn't recognize the vineyard, and he suspected the year meant very little here. He uncorked it, and held it out over her glass, starting to pour.

"It's much more than I was expected either way, and if it tastes a tenth as good as it smells I'm in for a treat."

As he settled down, Amelia finished off preparations, the plates of food in place for each of them. Once that was done, she sat down in her own chair, grinning happily at him. "I hope that's the case then, I'd hate to disappoint you today."

She waited until he'd finished with her glass before picking it up, offering it up to clink with his in a small toast. "Happy Birthday Sir Ky."

Ky blushed slightly, but still smiled back. "Thank you again."

He took a sip of his wine, then picked up his knife and fork to take some of the vegetables into his mouth. He gave an approving murmur around them, chewing slowly. "No disappointment at all," he said when he'd swallowed, pushing more onto his fork.

She soon followed suit, taking a sip from her own drink and beginning to eat, though stealing a glance or two to check on his expression to see how the food measured up. From the looks of things, the meal was a success.

"Well, that's a relief. I usually don't do anything more elaborate than cooking fish over a campfire, so you can understand why I was a bit nervous." she replied, bashfully toying with a few strands of her hair.

He smiled back. "You did the food justice. I've had army rations and gone to fancy state dinners, and your food is in a class with the second while your company is so much more pleasant."

Amelia flushed, both flattered and embarrassment by the compliment. Still, she did have to wonder about that remark, her head tilting curiously, hoping she wasn't prying too much. "I take it you find some of the high ranking boring?" she enquired

Ky shrugged. "It's hard to want to press hands and talk about pleasantries when you're responsible for an army that isn't getting all the supplies it needs. I worked regularly with men and women who put everything on the line, and to hear people abstractly talk about the value of human life as if it didn't have that much value...was hard."

"I'm sorry, I can understand the frustration. I admit sometimes I wish I didn't have to mingle with those sort of people so much myself." she replied, taking another sip of her drink. It couldn't have been easy for him to endure; those sort of responses are really what drove her father, and her in the future, to make sure any forces used by Seyruun were shown the most appreciation and respect possible.

"I was decent at it, so I got asked to do it a fair amount. What brings you into such interactions regularly?" He ate while he waited for her response, continuing to visibly enjoy both the company and the food.

Oh dear, this was always an awkward topic for her to breach. No matter what she did, it always felt out of place blabbing out her status, even if asked. Still, there was no turning back now. "Well, it's just part of being in my position, as a...princess." she replied, mumbling the last word a bit, simply waiting for his reaction.

"Ah." Ky just smiled, slotting in some of her earlier remarks to him about duties and obligations. "That would explain it then. I'm sure you're better prepared for it than I was at first, in that case."
