"Oh, you got back early, guess that spoiled the surprise. " she mumbled sheepishly, though still smiling up at him. "Do you like it?"

"It was a very kind thought, although entirely unnecessary." He didn't require anyone to go to any sort of effort at all for his birthday. "And I assure you, it was still a surprise, you merely weren't present for the full effect of it. How did you know?"

"I know I didn't have to, but I wanted to." she giggled, moving in close enough to give him a hug, still beaming happily at him, clearly content in seeing that he did like the surprise. "Happy Birthday."

Really, the thought alone was enough to insure that he would like the food. He'd eaten enough army rations and on occasion been grateful to at least have those that anything cooked and warm was automatically delicious.

Being royalty, as well as generally being on the road and eating whatever food they served in the inns she stopped at, she didn't have a lot of practical experience with preparing food. Thankfully she had played it safe and went for something simple.

She waited until he'd finished with her glass before picking it up, offering it up to clink with his in a small toast. "Happy Birthday Sir Ky."

He took a sip of his wine, then picked up his knife and fork to take some of the vegetables into his mouth. He gave an approving murmur around them, chewing slowly. "No disappointment at all," he said when he'd swallowed, pushing more onto his fork.

"Well, that's a relief. I usually don't do anything more elaborate than cooking fish over a campfire, so you can understand why I was a bit nervous." she replied, bashfully toying with a few strands of her hair.
