Does anyone reading this know who to ask about legality of and royalty fees associated with recording other people's songs to which they still hold the copyright? I'm playing at open mike at the Mill on the sixteenth and they usually record a tape of you playing and give it to you. I was thinking it would be fun to make a CD from the recording to ( Read more... )

I am of no help with the royalty stuff, but wouldn't the people in charge of copyrighting those things know some stuff? At my dad's restaurant, they could theoretically get in a lot of trouble by them, because they play CDs over the stereo, but aren't paying the royalties for that. I want to say it's like ASCAP or something like that.
Ah, so maybe I am of -little- help. But good luck, and I'm going to mark my calendar for that Monday!

I tried looking at the artists' and record companies' web sites but found nothing about this nor a simple way to contact someone. What is your dad's restaurant? And when are you going to Spain?

My dad's restaurant is called Charann's, and it's in Tampa, Florida. I'm going to Spain el 22 de enero. And I'm sorry I didn't call you back the other night; nothing exciting was going on, except watching my boyfriend play video games, so I figured that would prove to be fruitless for the both of us.

Maybe since they're so hard to contact, you could just claim that you DID try to, but they must've had a bad number on their site. Or something. . . . :)

Oh, too bad! I was with someone and we had drinking chocolate kinda like the Aztecs used to drink and we were looking for more people to enjoy it with us and a place to boil milk.

Being that I compose hip hop, a lot of my music contains samples of other peoples' works. I live this. So maybe this will help ( ... )

A very realistic and helpful view. And yeah, if I just take cash, there's no way to prove I didn't just give all the CDs away.

A few of my dad's friends have made CDs of them doing other artists' songs which they sell locally and give out, and I'm pretty sure they don't worry about royalties or anything like that, probably for reasons cited in the comment above me.
