YES

You are going to be put down for having obscure taste like I am put down for having obscure taste, but oh my god!, Street of Crocodiles is one of my favorite films. Please tell me you've watched Weekend and also why you choose the directors you do.

I would like to have a discussion with you since no one here is capable of grasping foreign or art film concepts. [Maybe that is harsh, certainly not no one, but no one who has come forth.]

YES, again

I hate to contradict myself but this is the sixth time I have read your application and each time I lose respect for what initially grabbed me: your taste in film.

I admit the first read was quick because I was impressed you liked The Brothers Quay.

I have to change my vote to an emphatic no to counter my impulsive yes.

Out of curiosity, what's making you lose respect? If it's the overly condescending paragraph I have to make a confession... I really had no idea what to write about and figured that it was the best way to make me sound elite. I truly don't discuss film in that fashion in real life, or even in online discussion usually, but seeing as yes, I was trying hard to get in, I thought that's what would work. It probably would have made better sense to lurk around a while and watch what kind of paragraphs work and what kinds do not, but I'm not a very patient person and wanted to do this as soon as possible. It may sound like I'm making excuses here, but I did the entirety of the application in about ten minutes before my parents kicked me off the computer. So, I apologize and if you would like me to explain something to you in a different way I'm willing to.

In your paragraph, I can't get over this feeling that you're just "name dropping" and that annoys me to no end. It undermines all the good things that were stated in your paragraph and the rest of your application. To paraphrase you, I hate it when kids think they're super film elitists because you can name a couple of directors who you consider to be "unknowns" just because they aren't on a massive, mainstream Spielberg level. I mean, come on. Herzog and Godard are both fairly well-known, as is Bergman.

No.

Also, there are several notable spelling errors within your application. That is also irritating.

Actually, that was my point, that Herzog, Godard, and Bergman aren't obscure.

I think the word obscure is used by damsels in distress. I hate the word. You're right that the directors you list arent unknown, but you're wrong if you believe everyone knows them.

For instance, Bergman. He's a classic. But how do the majority of people learn about his movies? 1) Gaspar Noe is often associated with Bergman. Noe's recent movie Irreversible was a success in theaters and therefore is "hot talk" amongst kids who want to have obscure taste. 2) Bergman is taught in film class, his movies are part of library FLIC collections, or a well known director manipulated one of his movies and credited his name ( ... )

Is "success" really the word you want to use to describe "Irreversible"? I'm not doubting anything else you wrote in this comment, but Newsweek called "Irreversible" the "most walked out of" movie of the year. It's making the news and "hot talk" for sure, but it's not exactly a smashing success, seeming to be far too shocking for most viewers.

Just nitpicking. Please ignore me.

no.

shitty photo. fix it.

you're not all that exciting. you're probably somewhat interesting, and i'd probably love to argue you with you, but then, i can also see you just being an extra in your beloved films. standing around, trying to pretend you're not looking at the camera.

Do you know what I like about obscure listing of books/movies/music? It gives me a fresh place to look for culture. Most of what you listed I've heard of and not seen. Some of what you listed I haven't a clue about. But I love that - now I'll look into what I haven't experienced yet.

I don't find you boring. I think you'd be a good teacher, not in the traditional sense of that word, but a good friend-that-teaches. I learn most from the people around me, and I think that if I knew you in real life you'd be able to point me into different directions with art and film and literature. I respect people who are able to do that for me.

Yes, undoubtedly.

apparently i talk about film in a condescending fashion
i'm glad you realize this.
(actually, you spelled condescending incorrectly in the application. hmm. you also said "fist of all.")
i'm sure that "kids today" will learn that the majority of films made in this period are "insignificant" in the grand history of film, especially when the next generation of youth gets swept up in a movie that they, the elders, just can't connect with.
and if they don't, well, i'm sure that means you're better than them.
also, who's to say that evey member of the great unwashed should even have the privilege of partaking in film's rich history? isn't it the obscurity, the rarity of a Godard film that, in some ways, makes it even more special?
i, too, deplore the suggestion made by others that donnie darko is a life-changing piece of cinema. but if every kid on your block became a film snob like you, could you honestly say you'd be happy? i wouldn't ( ... )
