The end of the rain had come just in time to squeeze in a few long rehearsals before the big day. Cole had been running around like a fool all morning (with the help of Dairine), making sure that costumes were finished, the stage was set, seating was arranged, props were ready, the musicians had everything they needed... and on and on. Back home, he was never this hands-on; his job on opening night was to show up in a limo in a tuxedo with Linda on his arm and be escorted to the front row, where he'd watch from the audience. Though that would be just the position he'd be taking after a short introduction (albeit alone); with Peter doing such a great job both playing and cuing the other musicians, he wasn't even needed at the piano.
There was quite a crowd, which seemed to make a few of the actors nervous, but Cole gave them a quick pep talk backstage, and didn't have to lie for a word of it. He got up and said a few words to the audience, just to introduce himself, thank people who needed thanking, and rave about the talent of the cast. And of course, to ask that they all simply relax and enjoy. Then he sat down and watched with everyone else.
The show went off without a hitch. A few of the cast were obviously nervous in the beginning, but seemed to hit their stride, and every musical number sounded fantastic. The audience laughed in all the right places (and some unexpected ones--there was just something about the way that Joey delivered some lines, and once Maureen nearly tripped on her dress coming down the stairs and ad-libbed something in Reno's usual loud, nasal voice). Evey was endearingly sweet, and her worries over her singing proved to be misplaced. Fiyero, Shawn, and Olive all proved to be just the right amount of over-the-top. Summer proved to have some great comedic timing, and Jack was of course just as charming as Billy should be. And everyone in the chorus sang and danced fantastically--or if anyone didn't, they did a great job of faking it.
It was just the right sort of musical. Ended with a couple of weddings and a big musical number.
After the cast took their bows and a standing ovation, everyone trickled out of their seats and stood around talking, greeting the actors and actresses and musicians as they made their way into the crowd.
