> but I'm not so sure about Israelis

i read a book a few years ago written by an Israeli journalist that described the political system in Israel and the peace campaigning that was internal to Israel but failed to effect government policies. It led me to believe that in the main the horrors of the government aren't reflected in the more sensible and pragmatic view of the population as a whole and that overall, they have more to do with the way the election system results in control of policy by 'hard liners' of various persuasions who the main party needs to keep the government together. of course, it could all be outdated now, but somehow i suspect (or is that hope?) not.
