Aaaand now I feel like watching that pilot again, although I wasn't even sure how much I liked it. Trust you to make me see the potential in something.
This was lovely. Raw and precise and everything I love about your writing. Plus pirates. ;)
I'm not a fan of the writing, which tries to hard to be vulgar but doesn't always make it feel organic to the dialogue, and I was decidedly underwhelmed by both Luke Arnold (Silver) and Hannah New (Eleanor), important leads both. But I'll tell you what I loved: Flint, Gates, Max, Anne and Jack. I've watched the final scene in the brothel/tavern between Max, Anne and Jack at least 10 times now, and if the rest of the series can live up to the fun and smarts of that scene, I'll be pretty happy, or at least entertained.
I think you can tell a lot about the odd dynamic between Anne and Jack just from the three scenes they have together. Toby Schmitz (one of the best Australian theatre actors of his generation) looks a bit like a mad steampunk scientist with his tinted glasses, live-wire hair and white coat, and he's clearly decided to play Rackham as this rather flamboyant, erudite, underhand, vain, and somewhat pretentious (his 'Can I help you?' to Max when she slinks into his lap, omg, so perfectly pitched) man who doesn't strike
( ... )
This is a more lively treatment of these two characters than that pilot which...tries..so so hard.
At least the ships are pretty and Toby Stephens can carry a scene when required (and this show requires it often). The character designs are pretty interesting, but i'm not sure about that John Silve, who doesn't seem to be much of an interesting rogue so far.
I like a lot of the actors involved, so I'm kind of praying that the writing improves...but I'm not holding my breath.
John Silver spends too much time looking lost and confused, and not enough time being crafty. This might improve in later episodes, as he becomes more acclimated to the pirating lifestyle. I hope it's not due to general failings on the part of the actor, Luke Arnold, although that's a possibility too
