hi friends. i've made it safely to flagstaff. that's in arizona. this whole trip has been like one big geography lesson for the dyslexic. i always failed geography b/c i couldn't remember what went where. i even had a shower curtain with a map of the world on it so i could study during my two showers a day. but this is even better ( Read more... )

goddamnit.

i've got a map of the states up over my desk so i always know exactly where you are, what highways you're near, and the fastest and/or most scenic routes to travel between point A and point B. i realize this makes me as neurotic as you are, just in a different way, but i feel better knowing that if by chance you should happen to need my help, i could be useful to you somehow.

i wish i had had today off so we could really have talked when you called, instead of me hiding under the desk and talking in code so i don't get fired for doing personal whatever while i'm on the clock.

i miss you so much. i'm glad that you're really seeing that land we mostly just look at out the airplane window. there's a reason people used to find god out in the wilderness. i just wish i was out there with you to see all of it.

i love that you have a map on hand at all times. i was thinking that maybe you just had a miniature hand drawn hand laminated one in your pants pocket, but on the wall is just as good. as scary as this whole thing is, the trip was worth the experience. i wish i was still out there. there is so much destruction and beauty and decrepidness. is that a word? you would be moved. i was moved every second of that goddamned highway. but now i'm here, and i've got to find more beauty. oh and when you come visit i'm taking you down the coast. rt.1 is full of beaches and it looks like the Goonies. it's incredible. we can't go swiming though it's too cold.

you are in a dingy cafe in texas. that is perfect. you should be reading a typed note over coffee. i hope.
also, the midpoint is close enough to midway that i will reference the joni mitchell song, "i'm midway down the midway, slowin down," in hopes that you near the end of your journey soon, and in safety.
but the road is the thing.
i love you friend.
