Question about uncensored DVD

Oct 05, 2011 10:51

Hi, everyone ! I just wanted to check on something with fellow fans..

The only way to have an uncensored version of the movie (aside from the old VHS) is if you have the blu-ray disc and a way to play it, right ? No version of the DVD is uncensored ?

Thanks for any help ! :D

I actually have an uncensored version of the DVD, but I got it pretty much IMMEDIATELY after it was released on DVD; within a few weeks or so, I believe. I can't do it right this second but I may be able to take some photos of the case and such and upload them later for you, if you like, so you might know what to look for?

There is no difference in the cases from the immediate (uncensored) release of the dvd and later (censored) versions.

I have yet to buy the Blu-ray myself (although it's next on my list of things to buy), but if it's any help, there were two different DVD releases, both of which I own. The first release was from 2004, is full-frame only, but is completely uncensored. The second DVD release came out a few years later and the difference between them is obvious in the packaging: the second release is clearly labeled across the top as a "25th anniversary edition" and features original artwork (as opposed to the American copycat cover of the first DVD release). This version is widescreen, but is censored. I never watch this version because it is censored, despite the fact its picture and sound quality are slightly better... I've heard the Blu-Ray offers both the censored and uncensored soundtracks AND widescreen format, so I'm very excited about getting that! If you don't have a Blu-Ray player though and need the DVD, the Blu-ray comes as a combo pack with a DVD as well. Unfortunately, not owning it yet myself, I can't verify if that DVD offers the ( ... )

Thank you for commenting ! :) So there is a difference in the covers ? Is this that earlier version ?

Some of the reviews mention censoring so I'm all confused.

Oh, it's my pleasure to help, trust me! This film is very near and dear to my heart. I grew up with it, have loved it for as long as I can remember, so anything I can do to help a fellow fan of it is a joy! :D The link you posted is the earlier version, yes! I wouldn't pay much attention to the reviews on Amazon.com; I've generally found that people comment on items they shouldn't be, or simply post the same comment on all of them without concern for version. Case in point: on the old release version from 2004 you've linked to here, one comment is about the blu-ray release, not even the DVD in question! So you can only trust those reviews to a certain extent. As I said, though, I own both DVD releases, so I can vouch for the 2004 version being uncut, but full-frame only. The later release was widescreen, but censored. The blu-ray, if the reviews are correct (and I desperately hope they are), has both widescreen AND uncensored audio. I have been waiting for that release! :D In any case though, as far as the older DVD releases go, if ( ... )
