This was excellently written, and more than a little scary - it really brought me back to when I was a kid and wouldn't/couldn't sleep with my back to the closet, or thought that there were monsters in the cellar, or all sorts of things.
Though maybe I'm not all that grown up, because sometimes, in the dead of the night, I just have to make sure that I'm wrapped up snugly in blankets, just in case...
Thank you so much. Your own prose is so pitch-perfect that I'm really delighted to get a comment about my writing from you.
I think every child has these fears, and maybe they're unfounded, but it doesn't stop them from being scary. I couldn't sleep with my back to the closet, either! And my mother was terrified of her cellar when she was a kid.
And yeah, sometimes I still check to make sure the blankets are covering my neck.
Very creepy! I would love to know what happened with Eli and Gracie. And the spot on the floor is even creepier because I have no idea what it is.
I can't remember any ongoing childhood fears except the one that started after I watched Salem's Lot when I was... eight? There's a scene where the master vampire comes crashing in through the kitchen window and falls below-camera, and then he rises up from the floor and it was really terrifying. I thought about him off and on at night in bed for years. Thank goodness for blankets; our great protectors.
Very chilling and so solidly written. I think that they way you structured the piece keeps a great, great rhythm and it flows so well. The characters are engaging and the dialogue is fantastic. This was a wonderful read. Nice job and good luck in Round 2!!!

Gracie I have a pretty good sense of what happens to her.
I was so scared of vampires. But it was because of the vampires on the Electric Company tv show!
