HELP! Need photo storage advice

Dec 16, 2016 09:00

So Dropbox is doing away with their public folder which is where ALL my fic art is hosted.

Some folks are going to Photobucket but I was wondering where other folks host their graphics and the pros and cons of each.

My art needs to be moved fairly quickly so if you could drop a comment here that would be awesome.

Thanks

Yeah, I got that email, too, but it looks like the links are gonna remain active for almost another year... it's gonna be a pain updating all of my screencaps links, but most of my art is being posted from various folders that have nothing to do with the public folder...

You can still use DB... my plan is as follows, I will look through whatever I have in my public folder (AFAIK there are mostly preview pics for screencaps posts) and I will setup a new folder somewhere in my DB and copy everything there... and then I will try to work on updating my links... PITA, yes, but a year is more than enough time :D

ETA: Forgot to say, I was once a Photobucket member - yeah, not gonna happen again, their software is nothing like the beautiful DB, plus they spammed the shit out of my email up to a point where I just had to setup a filter and block them, lol :D

I know there is also IMGUR but I have no idea how it works. But yeah, I'm sticking with dropbox :D

I've just dumped everything into Photobucket as a precaution since I already have an account, but I really HATE Photobucket. It's so product focused and you have to jump through so many hoops to get a public link that it's impossible to use.

The problem with Imgur is the size limitations - it compresses the shit out of everything.

ETA - that's old news. Apparently Imgur doesn't do that automatic compression anymore and for Windows, has an add-on that gives a public link, per this review.

I'm kind of sick about this. All the comms, all the posts, thousands of comments...

I know if I go month my month through my archive, it'll eventually get done. But I need a service with a clean interface. Something that works from the desktop. Where I can right click and get a link.

Something like, I don't, know ... Dropbox?????????

Ok, but they are only killing the public folder, not the entire dropbox, so my understanding is that all you have to do is either copy the content to a different folder and generate new links or leave it where it is and generate new links after Sept 2017??

That is how I understood the email.

I don't think the links will create publically visible content.

Testing...

it's a web thing, you have to replace WWW with DL, in extreme cases you change www.dropbox.com to dl.dropboxusercontent.com but I always just replace www with dl and that's it... All my art on LJ is posted from a private folder that is nowhere near the public folder :)

Do you actually have a public Dropbox folder? Free accounts didn't get them after 2014, so you might not be affected.

I have a free account which I created in November 2013.

What exactly is the difference between a public and private folder?

Hmm. Above, olena mentions using the dl.dropbox.org coding... which is what I have been using all the time. So that means all my files are private and this doesn't affect me? I think...?

I really hate it when the companies change things like that.

I was just telling Lola that I'm gonna be paying for my laziness now, lol... because when I first started building my caps library, I made a subfolder in my public folder where I was putting the previews - always 2 fav pics per episode/movie/whatever... and then I was thinking that maybe I should move this to the folder where I keep the actual pics but I kept putting it aside... and now DB is sticking it in my face, lol... but now I have motivation to actually organize it better :D

I use Imgur, which is okay ish. Not the easiest to navigate if you have a ton of art, but very easy if you only have say 100 pieces.

I hate photobucket, it's so slow on my computer and continually crashes.
