Financial Freedom, Taking a Turn, and Another Poem

Feb 17, 2006 21:11

Debts To PayFor a long time, debt has seemed like a burden on my back. It’s not pleasant being in debt. Gratefully, I don’t have to worry about growing interest since it was borrowed from family, but it still seems like I’m, as the Bible says, a servant to the lenders. So, I’ve set the very realistic goal of becoming debt free by the end of the ( Read more... )

One of the reasons I haven't gone to university is because I don't want to take out a student loan and end up in debt for years as I know many people are. But then what do you think of mortgages? I mean, where do we draw the line? It's a little confusing if you ask me!

It's possible to work at the same time that you attend college part time. Some people do that, but it takes quite a while to get a degree. ...

I would want to avoid a mortgage, myself, since it's a form of debt. There may be circumstances where it's necessary, but I don't think it's usually. The line to draw is the line of necessity. Is it necessary to have a really expensive house? No. Is it necessary to have a place to sleep? Yes. *shrugs* Determining what's necessary isn't always easy. Food and shelter are the basic necessities (which boils down to health).

Yeah, that's what I'm doing...or trying to do. I've pretty much decided to work and take part-time courses here and there... just did my first one in the fall. =)

oh no! I hope you BRING a lunch to work rather than not eat lunch at all!
I dunno if its morally wrong to get lightly into debt. Sure seems like it is. Being in debt is a heavy burden to carry.

Ummm...as far as crazy driving goes....I plead the 5th. lol

I like your poem! :)

I'll make sure I don't starve to death. :) Part of it is that I want to put in more hours at work. Hopefully I can keep the breaks at around 1/2 hour. It has been pretty crazy at times with 2 hour breaks! :O

LOL. You're a crazy driver? ... Hmm, I can believe it. ;)

Well, I'm glad you enjoyed it. :)

Personally, I think driving crazily would be fun. =)

I like the poem. I only wish I believed it more.

:) Take it easy in your muscle car, now! (It can be fun ... as long as it's relatively safe and legal.)

Thanks. I actually wrote something like it before (not as a poem) and decided to make it into a poem.

Amen, Bethany ... so do I ... so do I.

Debt. Ohh. That's a good one to bring up. =)

Feeling the incredible negative effects of our family being in debt for the past few years has definitely left me rather opposed to the concept of borrowing money. Besides the fact that financial instablity wrecks havoc and causes for much stress for both parents and children, I think the Bible quite clearly advises against putting yourself in such uncomfortable situations unless the circumstances are extreme.

At the same time, I have mixed feelings... especially if it regards borrowing money for schooling or making payments for something, because our culture is so set up under this credit system that you can hardly get anywhere unless you abide by it.

I still need to study the issue more thoroughly I suppose.

The mental image that comes to mind over your "squealing ... in a “granny” Oldsmobile car" has me grinning. Melody used to drive a blue granny car, and it accelerated so well she often left the hot shots in the dust after sitting in the stop lights. lol ( ... )

It would be pretty fun to be crazy driving but It isn't always fun when you arn't the one driving.

I agree with you on the whole dept thing.

:) Yeah, you're right. You don't usually trust anyone as much as yourself.

:/ We're living in a mostly ungodly society. I think this whole borrowing culture has developed from the erosion of our Christian foundations. There used to be a time, for example, when people built their own houses ... and other people would pitch in. Materialism seems to have produced a culture that almost requires debt -- even just to live normally. But it's more often possible to avoid it, I would suppose, than not and should be avoided if possible.

Anyway, I totally agree with your assessment of debt.

That's funny about Melody! Lol. Yeah, the one I have has good acceleration, too. It's a Cutlass Calais, so it doesn't look too bad for an Oldsmobile, either. :)

One thing you won't like too much: speed limits (at least I never have). Those things get pesky. ;)

Oh, thanks. I'm glad you were able to enjoy it. ...I've started composing music for it, but I always get stuck. :P One of these days...

I don't believe it is always wrong to be in debt.

Right, I'd agree with that. There are times when it may be necessary to get into debt, just like there were times in the Old Testament when it was necessary for Jews to be sold into slavery. However, I don't think debt is ever a positive thing, and in that regard, I think it's best avoided.

I've added you as a friend, FYI. That baby face picture is kind of ... troubling, but I'm used to it now. :)
