Oh, I am so with you on love for Sara Bareilles, especially Gravity, it's such a gorgeous song and I adore Rachael Yamagata, Worn Me Down was a song I played on repeat for a long time a couple of years back
( ... )
Oh, that song... yeah, I have it on my ipod, listened to it earlier actually. I even heard rumours that the lead singer is a stud and gets all of the ladies with her posh hot voice ;)
(That icon always reminds me of how Lily appeared to have no hand in that photoshoot :S)
Oh, interesting question. Similarly to you, I find music definitely hits off thoughts, be it a beat or a lyric or just the general feel of a song can sometimes give me a phrase, or maybe a few lines and then I tend to go from there. But it's definitely a big part of where I get ideas from. In general the song tends to come first rather than having an idea and searching for a song, though it has gone both ways. I normally like things with a bit of an upbeat tempo to them, but for writing then folk/acoustic/indie stuff I tend to find is better.
Writing playlist currently includes: Radiohead, which is helping with an atmosphere for a lot deep and dark things going on Meursault, which is slightly more upbeat, though there's a particular song that I'm taking a lot from just now which is much slower and acoustic (A Small Stretch of Land) only because it happens to work well Wilco and Pearl and the Beard are others featuring highly on the recently played list.
I definitely work in the same way as you, I love how just a certain line from a song can charge off an idea, even if the rest of the song doesn't fit - I tend to find that I'll fall in love with a song instantly if one particular lyric can catch my attention and really stand out for me.
I pretty much like all types of music, my itunes is ranges from classical to rap, but I totally agree, when writing I tend to go for more folk/acoustic songs, I like that they're more mellow and don't tend to overpower my thoughts, you know?
I'm not a big fan of Radiohead, I could never get into them for some reason :S
Oh totally. I have my ipod on all day at work in the background when I'm doing other stuff and every now and again a line will break me out of what I'm doing, and I'll have to go back and listen to it again and again.
I can get not being into Radiohead, I have to be in a certain mood to listen to it because it can be bloody depressing, but at the same time I find a lot of it really inspiring creatively.
