[Tony shakes himself awake, looking blearily around him. He'd had some type of strange dream. He had still been in Mayfield, but he had been with friends from home. Pepper was in his living room, drinking that godawful tea she likes so much for some reason, and Rhodey was sitting in the kitchen with his ( Read more... )

Just pick one and get it over with.

[Bazett herself does not care for the color of her clothing. Although if she were given a choice, she would not wear the garish clothing she currently has on, she has been forced to wear it out of necessity.]

[She scoffs.]

Do you make a habit of doing this to every woman you meet, Stark?

[If he goes too far, then she is definitely going to punch him.]

Compliment them? Yes, absolutely, it's only polite. Do onto others as they would do onto you, right? Flirt with them...? Only the attractive ones, naturally. (...Attractive and of age, of course, I'm not sick.)

So, now that I've done both for you, as the Golden Rule states, you should do one or the other to me. Or both, if you so choose.

[This man, apparently, believes that she enjoys being the target of his flirtations.]

Very well, if only to abide by the rules of equivalent exchange.... You are what would be considered conventionally handsome, and I am sure some women, at least, consider your flirtations charming.

[There, that was enough, wasn't it?]

[Tony is bemused and bows graciously. He never gets tired of flirting; it's always been his favorite game to play. It helps that he wins so often. But he also just likes throwing people off balance, whether by aggravation or flirtation. It helps him figure out what they're really like... and it's hilarious.]

Onto newer and better subjects, then. I've heard that holidays are nothing to enjoy around here, and usually involve terrible things. I'm new here, but... am I the only one who finds this particular "event"... a little tame? It's gotten cold and the electricity is unreliable, but I haven't noticed anything else, really. Have people been exaggerating or something?

No. Just toward the end of November, this place was destroyed and cannibals invaded. Compared to that, at the beginning of this event, it seemed that they were going to take a slower route and slowly freeze us to death over the course of this winter. However, that was proven wrong a couple days ago, when it was revealed that people's memories and even existences were being tampered with.

Tell me, do you remember having a dream on the 16th of December?

Uh... very very vaguely, yes. Well, I THINK it was around then. I haven't dreamed since. Though I can't remember what happened, to be honest, because I was...
[...drunk]
...drowsy. Took some medicine that night.

Oh, I see. Well, I certainly was not drowsy, and thus I remember the contents of my dream. All of the sentient beings in Mayfield were offered a choice--save the town by disappearing, or disregard the dream and remain. Needless to say, we were among those who disregarded the dream. However, some of us chose to make the sacrifice instead. The next morning, the remainder of us were given the news that they had been erased from Mayfield and replaced by constructs that had been created by this town. Not only that, but the memories of those of us who chose to remain are being erased. We are slowly forgetting about the people who had been replaced by this town.

[She has started making notes the second she realized she was forgetting. As a result, she now knows more about Tohsaka through her notes than her actual memories.]

Some of my allies were among those people. Therefore, I am working to find a way to reverse this effect.

What in... Good Lord, it's like a Twilight Zone episode gone mad.

...This entire place is a Twilight Zone episode gone mad, WHAT am I...even talking about...

I suppose I just haven't noticed because I don't know anyone here. How is this possible? Who has the capability to... erase someone's existence?

I am not sure what the Twilight Zone is, but I do know that the town apparently has the power to pull us all in here...and to erase our existence in here as well. Or, at least, hide us away and replace us with constructs. However, given the town's past behavior, I doubt it will allow our comrades to be replaced permanently.

Hm? What do you mean? So, Mayfield or the Gods of Chaos or whatever the hell else controls all this doesn't do these things "for realzies?" There's a reset button in the sky? So there must be a purpose to all of this... a desired end-result...

Mayfield is a genius loci. If you will allow me to use a similie, it is like a child and we are like its toys. However, it dislikes playing with broken toys, no matter how violent its games get. Therefore, it will always "fix" us, at least physically, at the end of every "game." So far, I do not know its objective for keeping us here, but it must have one beyond sheer malice. Things this intelligent usually do.

Waitaminute. You're phrasing this as if... you don't believe Mayfield is a sentient entity, do you? It's... it's just a town, isn't it...?

It is a genius loci, or sentient location. Its sentience, though, seems to only be displayed in the physically and mentally traumatizing situations it puts us through. Were you not informed of this on your first day here?

I was not informed of much at all. Probably should have looked into that pamphlet thing, but my "family" wasn't around to show me where it was.

It should usually be taped to your fridge. However, seeing how we tend to fall into a state of disorientation when we are brought here, it would have been easy to miss.

[She had only found hers when she returned home in the evening.]
