out of the game, time to upgrade?

14 weeks since my last post. . .Is posting nothing better than posting worthless crap?  I've been on facebook in an attempt to find people who go to the same community college as I do, or at least live in the general area, but to no avail.  So that's where I've been.

Lately I've found myself skirting the edge of minimum requirements for computer ( Read more... )

Processor: Damn. That's a lot of power for 160 bucks.
Motherboard: Crossfire hasn't caught on like SLi, but that doesn't mean it isn't good.
Video card: If you'll be playing DirectX 9-era games most of the time, pick up an x1950pro. Mid-range DirectX 10 cards take serious performance hits when trying to emulate DX 9. Also, DX 10 cards can't use anti-aliasing effectively above 1024x1280 resolution.
If you're looking to play DX 10 games, get a Radeon HD2600 or better. They outperform the 8600 in DX 10 games and in emulating DX 9. They also have HDMI connectivity and HDCP, not to mention superior HD content decoding.

If I get a dx9 card now, once games start going towards dx10 (or dx10.1 seems more likely) would I need to get a new card or just update direct X?

I'm pretty sure my copy of XP pro will be yelling at me if I try to transfer it to a new machine. Should I bite the bullet and use the RAM whore known as Vista? Is Vista 64 the bastard child that xp 64 was?

My speakers are part of a digital system (everything is going into a decoder/encoder) and don't sound as awesome when hooked up in a conventional method. (Damn you X-fi!) If I got a motherboard with a S/PDIF connection (optical or coaxial) could I plug my speakers into there and have them work?

A new motherboard I'm thinking about: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131096

I was reading about HDMI and HDCP and was wondering if I could hook up a cable box to my pc with a HDMI cable and not have to use a separate tv tuner?

A DX9 card cannot be upgraded to DX10 because DX10 uses a completely new set of geometry instructions. DX10 has combined vertex and pixel shaders into "geometry shaders," which require a completely different architecture to process. That said, every new game in the foreseeable future is either: A) Programmed using DX9, or B) Backwards compatible with DX9 ( ... )
