Right, an EP....I think that it's actually a techinical term originally, but my understanding of an EP is this....

Example #1

You have a mate at school who has a band, they don't have the time/money to get a studio and record and album, and they don't have a record contract. So they make an EP, which is like a taster, it has about 5/6 songs on it.

You find that a band will release one or two EPS before they debut an album.

Muse released two self-financed EPS before they recorded their first album, the Muse EP and the Muscle Museum EP.

I have a Louis fourteenth EP, which came about before the album...

Do you see what I mean??

As for the techinical bit, EP stands for "Extended play" and it was a 7" vinyl originally, and would have had two or three songs on either side...
