This BBC article says that pretty much everything you list above is exempt from the proposed bill anyway......

Yeah we've had a rather long and extensive debate on this elsewhere and discovered it is pretty much not real.

There is an attempt to put a ban through as a knee jerk reaction banning Katanas, whoever created that petition clearly had not done any resear5ch howver.

Pretty much. It essentially adds sharp, greater than 30", single-bladed, curved, hilted weapons to the restricted weapons list. Most reenactment and blunted martial arts weapons won't be restricted. There is also provision for licensing.

Here it is (I think) http://www.publications.parliament.uk/pa/cm200506/cmbills/217/06217.i-i.html

Also note that this bill is being introduced in the Scottish Parliament, not Westminster, and therefore would only cover Scotland, not the whole UK....

It's a shame there isn't a petition to have the "prime minisiter" get a grown up to check all the random laws they seem to come up with.
I would have thought there were laws which covered these things already, they just want to be seen to Do Stuff rather than seen to not spend money sorting it out.......

Can anyone supply a link to the actual proposed bill or anything that has some real reseach on the subject?

Sorry I've got to the stage I don't trust any of these petitions to accurate.

Not entirely convinced as to the effectiveness of these online petitions... I signed the one regarding the change in road tax laws, and was one of 1.8 million (if memory serves) who did, but the response was just a diplomatically worded email from Blair's office with no significant information. These petitions don't force discussion in Parliament - I'm tempted to say that if we feel strongly enough to oppose potential changes in law, we'd be better served writing to our MPs or demonstrating in person...
But yes, a total ban on swords would be stupid and unnecessary!
