Vids: Come up and See Me (Make Me Smile)

Sep 05, 2006 17:34

I have a fan fiction set nearly ready to go, but I'm hoping I'll, um, develop the ability to be coherent before I actually post it. (Sleep would help. A lot.) So I asked myself what I could do in my current state of incoherence (hints: nothing involving heavy machinery, sharp implements, explosives, or complete sentences), and it came to me in a ( Read more... )

Hee, Boy in the Bubble is awesomely awesome (the non-fannish friend I just showed it to also approves and can't believe how well it works), and I'll check out the others when I'm a little less brain-dead - thank you!

(And I snuck a vid rec into this post, although it was more whispering about weasels in the corner at a party, not shouting about them on the street.)

Ha! My theory was that Boy in the Bubble was one of those vids that would work well for non-fan types, and this is evidence in its favor. This is good to know, and will contribute materially to my plans to conquer the world.

*attempts evil mad scientist laugh*

*has coughing fit instead*

Okay, obviously I need to work on certain aspects of this plan a bit longer.

Yay! Thank you! And, for the record, stealth weasel pushing is a totally valid lifestyle choice. I support your decision to sneak recs in where people least expect them. Soon, everyone will love weasels! Metaphorically speaking, I mean - it'd actually be kind of scary to live in a world where everyone truly loved weasels ( ... )

Your vid recs are adorable. I want to hug them. :)

If you like the vidlets format, can I point you to sockkpuppett's "Cheapshots" vids? I am sure you know Lum's work, but you may have overlooked these, when there are so many shiny things to choose from at her site:

Cheapshots 1: FanFic Smackdown
Cheapshots 2 - Highlander

Thank you! They stand ready and willing to be hugged at any time.

Cheapshots 1: FanFic Smackdown
Cheapshots 2 - Highlander

Okay. I. How did I miss those? Because I swear I've downloaded everything ever on Lum's site.

Ah. She cleverly concealed them by not providing thumbnails. Curse her evil unthumbnailing ways!

Um. Maybe I need to get my vision checked.

But - yay! Vidlets! I can only think off-hand of one other true vidlet-style live-action vid - 21 Vidlets about Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which I love, because of course you could find the perfect footage for every part of "Fingertips" in BtVS - and even then, that vid is from one song. One song that has 21 pieces, yes, but the audio isn't edited the way Atlantis!'s audio is.

Perhaps audio editing is getting more possible, and so more people will be making vidlet sequences. I really hope so, because vidlets really work with humor, and lord knows we can never have too many funny vids.

*hopeful*

Trying again. (Posted right comment in wrong window. Oops.)

I *adore* 21 vidlets. You have good taste TFV!

Please pass the milk, please...Hee!

As it turns out, it was a totally fortuitous error, because I got it as the first in a very long series of double (and I swear in some cases it was triple) comment emails from LJ. You gave me the solution before I even knew I had the problem, so you are awarded a prize for extremely forward-thinking problem-solving. *awards prize*

(And - yay! 21 Vidlets! I do wish I had a bigger version of it, though.)

I have, in fact, not seen Atlantis! just yet. God help me, I am the emo fangirl. This must be remedied very, very quickly, lest the Hardy set in. I still have Mayor of Casterbridge-shaped nightmares from high school. *shudder*

Thanks for heading the pain off at the pass.

But wait. Is it the budding emo that enables you to write stuff like "The Ratio of Burning"? Because if so - well, I'm sorry, but you can't watch Atlantis! It's for the good of the fandom, really. I'm sure you understand.

And, hey, if it's any consolation - I have a hardcover copy of Jude the Obscure that you're more than welcome to borrow.

I still have Mayor of Casterbridge-shaped nightmares from high school.

*sympathizes*

My mandatory reading nightmares tend to come in the form of "Flight," a short story by John Steinbeck, which I was required to read in 8th grade and which totally destroyed everyone in the class. We were twitching wrecks by the time we were done, totally incapable of opening a short story without flinching. (We were extremely vulnerable; most of us already had short story induced PTSD from our required 7th grade reading of "The Cold Equations," which taught us that it's not just the universe that's unfair - it's also English teachers and short story writers ( ... )

Too late! I have seen it, now, and shall henceforth never be able to off another character (even slightly)! Woe, my little emo muse has thrown herself from the prow of the good ship Angst.

Yeah. Who am I kidding? Someone will buy the farm in my fic any day now. Slowly. (Presuming I finish something. Grr.) The emo muse is like that kid in The Ring: you can throw her down a well, but she'll just be pissed when she gets back. And soggy.

In all seriousness, I'm kind of blushing and skippy. Didn't know you liked Ratio. Cool. *g*

Ah, Steinbeck. Say no more. The Red Pony. *shudders with you* The worst part about the Hardy, really, was that I did it to myself. It was one of a plethora of titles we could choose from, and I blundered in trustingly. We were students once, and young. I've never opened a classic blind since ( ... )

*nods*

I tend to think of her more as a shadow - you can run, but she'll always be right behind you. And probably whispering in your ear, "Let's you and me hurt them, baby."

(Hmm. It is just possible that I've got my muses mixed up, because that actually sounds like the horror muse. Or maybe the psychotic muse. It's no surprise, really; I always have to look up the difference between Erato and Euterpe, too.)

In all seriousness, I'm kind of blushing and skippy. Didn't know you liked Ratio. Cool.

Well, okay. I admit that I should probably have actually, I don't know, told you about it, maybe via the handy comments feature I'm abusing right now. But in my defense, I assumed you'd know, because I don't think there's anyone in the fandom who doesn't love Ratio. It's a wonderful story.

Oh my god. *has traumatic flashback*

Here's another resident of Jupiter that you made incredibly, incoherently HAPPY with the Atlantis! rec. I'm making all these noises here behind closed doors so the Boytoy doesn't wake up and strangle me and ... screw it. I'm waking him up and showing him ALL the vids because this is a love that must be shared. I'm sure he'll be grateful in the end. *grins*

Is it not wonderful? It is just - OMG YES. (I'm struggling not to make noises myself, because the first time I saw it I squeaked with joy so loudly that our neighbor's dogs started howling.)

I wholly support this course of action. It is an act of true love to ensure that he sees the vids as soon as possible. What is mere sleep when there are great vids to be watched?

*nods emphatically*

(Um. Do not tell him I said so, though. You will definitely want to take all the credit for that idea yourself. *further emphatic nods*)

It IS! I tried to be very very quiet and could (barely) contain myself but the I got to the end where Lorne and Teyla and unspecified marine collectively wince and somehow that was too much! And I had to watch it again and again and squeack and jump on the bed and....I'm sounding like a complete nutcase, aren't I? Well, people always find that out in the end anyway. *is resigned*

(Um. Do not tell him I said so, though. You will definitely want to take all the credit for that idea yourself. *further emphatic nods*)Fear not. I take full responsibility for my own madness and he's used to it anyway. He already pre-emptively (did I spell that right?) refused to never ever wear Fraser-like boots for any reason at all, ever. *grins* The repetition is his, not mine. For some strage reason he thinks I'm a complete pervert. I can't imagine why. *acts ( ... )

Yes. Um. Sorry about the dairy metaphor - it just, sometimes these things get away from you. (I very nearly went to a macaroni and cheese place, so - really, it could have been worse.) But you definitely made a classic comfort food vid.

And I cannot thank you enough for the chance to revisit the time when I actually truly loved Star Wars.

It has been Many, Many Years since I wanted to treat Star Wars like any other fandom and write screwball fic for it, but doing this vid totally bunnied me. I have this one thing in my head that I'm totally going to hell for about Han and Lando and Chewie and intergalactic sexual politics, which is, you know, exactly the kind of story I get in my head for fandoms I love unabashedly. You cannot be "eh, it's all a franchise" or whatever and still want to deal the crack.
