Slashy Awards 151: Grave, Where Is Thy Victory?

Sep 18, 2006 20:23

First, an announcement.

Does anyone remember the 20 Questions game online? You know, the one where you played against a program. Well, it has new versions that are still in the learning phase, and I've had a delightful time teaching the movie and TV edition to be fannish. I added a bunch of my favorite characters to the database and have been ( Read more... )

Pairing names strangerian September 19 2006, 03:51:12 UTC
Having started reading Jack/Daniel lo those many years ago when it was actually hard to find (I know this might sound unbelievable now, but this was long, long after dinosaurs; it was even after Linear B, or there wouldn't have been half the Daniel there was), I am happy to say that JackJack has not been used as a term for J/D slash. I think, and unless it was pioneered well after 6th season, which sapped my will to live and which therefore (not being Daniel) I stopped watching. For a while, anyway.

Jack Daniels, while it was too obvious to miss and engendered some notable bad jokes (and one archive), never caught on as actual nomenclature. It remains a bad joke. I hope.

Am regarding your J/D recs with fear and hope.

*blinks blinks*

There was a time when J/D was hard to find? Maaaaan. What was wrong with the fangirls of that era? (But, hey, I'm a fine one to talk; I didn't get into the fandom until, like, two years ago, and then it was solely for the massively huge volume of FF out there. I am spoiled rotten.)

Oh, thank god. That's just - that's just so much of a relief. (And I totally take back everything bad I said about the fangirls of old. They may not have been speedy with the porn, but at least they didn't name their pairings ( ... )

What was wrong with the fangirls of that era?

They were writing Sentinel and Highlander and stuff like that. And while SG-1 has some crappy moments (some of them half a season long, but anyway), Sentinel was pure and utter craptastic proto-slash scenario and practically nothing else. It was the best crack going at the time. I also have a theory that at the very beginning of SG-1, the Jack/Teal'c vibe was a possibility (which led to some of the lamest threesome stories I've ever seen), and while Jack=Jim and Daniel=Blair without too much strain, Teal'c=/=Simon unless you work up a lot of backstory. Thus was progress impeded until J/D's pellucid radiance conquered all. This got easier as it became increasingly clear that Sha're wasn't going to join the regular cast.

I don't know where cute pairing names came from, but I abjure them all. Avaunt!

I've always loved the FF, but I hear the show was a little, um. I'm groping for a polite wording, here.

I've never entirely understood why Jack/Teal'c didn't happen more often. Well, okay - I have a theory that Teal'c and Sam aren't actually allowed to be real characters as much as Jack and Daniel. But since I've never seen the show, this theory is mostly based on the fact that in the FF, they aren't - they serve as plot devices or Mary Sues or whatever way more often than they actually get to be people. Even a lot of Jack/Sam and Daniel/Sam features an oddly characterless Sam. (Not all of it, of course.) So I wonder if the canon writers were just crap at creating characters at that point, and Jack and Daniel were more like people because they came kind of ready-made. (Jack was the original Jack + ( ... )

Bourbon. *sniggers helplessly* I so very much enjoy your recs. Ah, even if I don't get around to reading them. Um, yet.

Bourbon. *g*

Thank you!

Bourbon. *sniggers helplessly*

See, I find that pairing name much more amusing now that I know (per strangerian) that it's never actually been used. Before, I was just afraid, thinking someone was going to tell me, "Oh, yes, totally - there's a whole shared universe called Bourbon. You mean you've never read it? Daniel and Jack are bartenders!" (Or they could be alcoholics, I guess.)

I feel much better now that I know it's not.

Just wanted to say thanks for the 20 questions link, that is very cool and addicting.

Isn't it wonderful? I was sick last week, and I spent a lot of time teaching 20Q to recognize Touya Akira and Shindou Hikaru. And now it can get both of them (although, sadly, they're weirdly romanized to Akira Toya and Hikaru Shindo) within 20 questions, so the time I spent sick was not wasted.

(You know, it's just occured to me that if SG1 fandom was starting up now, in this modern era of unfortunate pairing names, this pairing would be called JackJack. Unless - wait. It's not actually already called that somewhere, right?)

THAT'S NOT FUNNY DON'T GIVE THEM ANY IDEAS.

Am I the only one who immediately thought Daniel Jackson/Death OTP here? I am? Okay. Um. Let's just, you know, forget I ever said anything.

You've read synecdochic's Daniel/Death story, right?

Well, I figure it's kind of late for a pairing name to take hold - I mean, the fandom's been around for a decade.

Yes. Definitely too late.

*looks around nervously*

Nope. But I am totally about to. Yay!

...and anyway, all of the other Jack-related portmanteaux are way funnier. J/S is Jam, for instance. Or Sack, depending. Jack/Janet is Jacket.

...And now I need to go lie down for a bit. Jam, oh my god. Sack. Jacket. That's just - that's just - wait. Why didn't you mention Jack/Teal'c being Tacky? Surely someone's come up with that.

Hell, they pretty much make everyone cry. Although at least SG1 has the distinction of having its portmanteaus make a good band name: Tacky Jam Sack Jacket would work really well. (They could call their first CD Tacky Jacket Jams Sack. Or, hey: Tacky Jacket Jams Saks, for a delightful commentary on modern fashion.)
