Hope you don't plan to smoke anywhere! The smoking ban went into full-on effect today, so expect an entire nation of cranky smokers!

- if you're going to be in London, just buy an Oyster card instead of paying individually for each ride - you can top it up with however much money you need and it never expires, so it'll be good for your next visit.

- if you plan on scoring with any boys, bring your own condoms. Guaranteed they won't have any of their own.

- pants = underwear, not trousers. People in the UK are preprogrammed with the American lexicon, but this particular mixup always induces giggles.

- sample as many local ales as possible! Amazing! They put Canadian ales to shame, so imagine what they'll do to American beer.

- say hi to my advisor, Elizabeth Cowie, who'll be at the same conference as you!

No, you can smoke outside - provided that it's not under an awning, at least 4 feet away from any building, or not in any public garden that has four walls (? - don't get that last one). As of today, you can't smoke anywhere inside - similar laws to the ones we have in Canada and you guys have in the US, only it's brand spankin new and still has that shiny gleam of non-freedom on it here. And everyone is cranky about it, because everyone and their dog smokes in this country.

I think that saying "England" is okay. I can't remember what I say or - more importantly - what my British friends say. I think it's pretty evenly split between "England" and "Britain."
