"And on the way I had a very fortuitous encounter with a pair of swimming trunks." This sentence definitely deserved its own paragraph. It sounds like a line from a children's novel. No, baby, this is real life.

The open back shot is very sexy, like a woman slinking out of a dress. Also great was getting to use the phrase "leg tunnel" and the very literal employment of the word "deathgrip."

Your comment confirming the cicada-ness of the shed led me to some research of my own, and apparently this belongs to a periodical cicada! (ETA: No, I was wrong, further research indicates that it's too late in the year for this to be a periodical cicada. It probably belongs to Neotibicen Canicularis.) Neotibicen Canicularis are supposed to be very common where I live. I clearly lead a very sheltered and indoor life.

Reading up on it actually taught me that the weird stick coming out of its head, the one that I looked at and thought, "That couldn't possibly be a proboscis," is indeed exactly that. They use them to suck fluids out of trees, and pictures I saw indicate that they can also support the insect as it molts, to the point where its legs don't even need to be touching the surface it rests on.

Also, I am an idiot, because like butterflies cicadas get their wings after they emerge. D'oh.

Thank you very much for your help!
