life is good
i have a home and usually someone there when i arrive
i have a fish, a cat and a damn dog
i like two of the three...not bad
i have parties no one comes to but i cant blame them
i still dream of a life larger than most get
one day i might decide to make it reality

they adopted an animal
a black one
brought it home and said "now you are our family"
everyday she comes home and says to their cat "hello maximus"
everyday he comes home to her and kisses her on the lips
motions for their cat
he says "i am happy."

sometimes love smells like wine
sweet and overwhelming
always intoxicating
today it smelt like homemade cookies
and a little salty, like sex
but no matter what the scent,

a fighting one
bought a big bowl and said. "this fish is ours."
everyday he comes to say "hello septimus."
he lays across her bed
blows her a kiss
and taps on the glass
he says "i think our fish is happy"

i am sure that he is.

it is no easy task. being good.
it gets no softer with time
he showed me he could catch candy in his mouth from great distances away
and he showed me the bare finger where a ring used to be

i ran my finger along the strange markings on her back and asked,
"what does this mean?"
she replied, "heaven sent messenger"
"oh. good. do you have any messages for me?" i asked
