All right, so, what does "pending Delete" in the status of a whois search mean? Does that mean the domain should be available soon? Because I want to buy back my old domain. I know the files are lost forever (in a series of unfortunate miscalculations, I somehow skipped every single back-up thinking I'd have the files in one of the other back-ups

Go to snapnames . com and see if it is available. If it is pending delete, you can pay to have them get it back for you if you backorder it:
Q:I lost my domain name. Can SnapNames help me get it back?
A:SnapNames is the first place to look if you’ve lost a domain name that you previously owned. Just search the SnapNames database inventory for the domain, and we’ll tell you if it’ll be available anytime in the next 30 days. If not, you can backorder the domain and we’ll grab it for you whenever it becomes available. Once available, many domain names can be purchased for as little as $69.
Hope this helps!

What is PendingDelete Status?
All domains that have passed the initial Suspension period (30 days from expiration) or that have been deleted, are initially placed on PendingDelete status before being purged from the Registry database and made available for registration. The exception to this rule are domains that are deleted within the first five days of the initial registration. These domains will not be placed on PendingDelete and will be purged immediately. Otherwise, domains will remain on PendingDelete status for a period of 20 days before being purged, unless they are "redeemed" by the registrar. This period is known as the Redemption Grace Period (RGP). See below for more information on RGP and domain redemptions.

Unfortunately everything from my old site has been wiped from archive.org. I don't know if that happened when the new domain owner set it to block robots from indexing or if it was for some other reason, but really I have to take a lot of the blame for relying on The Way-Back Machine instead of downloading stuff when I had the chance.

Losing all your files, what horror! I'm not sure how to get your domain back again, but I'll be happy to host when you're ready to go back up. Of the old LotR days I still have pretty much all of your fic on my hard drive.

Anyhow, thank you on all counts! msilverstar sent me a bunch of files she'd saved from archive.org, but if it wouldn't be too much trouble to ask for the ones you have as well, that would be amazing.
Also, looking at your icon--do you happen to have the LOTR dancing reindeer up anywhere still...?
