I can disagree...
Bright Eyes does not suck.
Good Charlotte is not a form of "punk".
Music doesn't need labels, it just complicates everything.
The publics view on emo is totally different than what emo actually is, so in some sense it does have more to it, but then again it doesn't.
Oh, and I really don't like the White Stripes.

How can you say labels complicate things? It actually makes things easier. They're there as descriptive words. Wthout them, if someone asked what kind of band "X" is, al you could say was "They're a band". With them, if someone comes up to me and asks what "X" is, I could say they're a hardcore band, and they'd know what I'm talking about.

Now on the lines of Good Charlotte, I've had this discussion before with many people. Good Chalrotte are punk rock because they use the same catchy 3-chord progression and simple, easy to rhyme, easy to remember lyrics as well known punks bands such as Rancid, River City Rebels, The Queers, The Real McKenzies and The Clash, for some examples.

Good Charlotte complains about themselves. They [the members of the band] label themselves "punk", when punk is not a label, merely a type of music.

And labels do complicate things. When you ask what kind of music band X plays, and you say emo, they may immediatly think Dashboard Confessional. Labels stereotype bands, and we all know stereotypes are bad.

"We aren't punk. We just want to play good teenage punk rock and look good while doing it."
-Joel Madden

That's because everyone remains ignorant to the fact that it's not just lyrics that make a genre. There is all these other attributes that go into it.

And think of how much worse it would be without the labels. When asking what kind of music Band X plays, and there are no labels to describe it, you're going to get a blank stare. It's far better to have someone tell you they're an emo band even if they are a band like DC because you'll still know what to expect.

Do you know what real emo is? Not to be offensive or anything, and this is kind of off topic, but I was just wondering.

I like Bright eyes, I don't like Good Charlotte, and Music does not need labels

Bright Eyes.. Why do you hate them? Conor Oberst is brilliant

Good Charlotte - I completely agree with concrete_random Yes I agree with you that, genre is based on more than just lyrics. But can I ask if you know what punk truly is? It seems so simple because obviously todays culture has defined it so quickly.. If you studied it you'd see that Punk is not a genre. It is a culture and a way of life. Yes, it's defined also as a way of music, but there is so much more deeply rooted in it. There is a lot about GC that goes against "punk" .. Maybe they could be some form of "punk" because they try to have the appearance.. But that has just caused destruction to pop culture because now punk clothing is everywhere from Avril Lavigne to fucking fashion stores charging 40 dollars for dickies or torn up clothing ( ... )

Desparecidos=Good
Bright Eyes=Not Good

And the emo I'm talking about would be the likes of Orchid, Satie, Indian Summer and some Rites of Spring and Fugazi.

Orchid's one of my favorite bands.

Eh. That's your opinion. Mine is Bright eyes is still great. I love Rites of Spring, Fugazi and Orchid.. I think I understand what you're saying about the emo thing. Basically in the eighties emo was like good metalheads. They'd go to shows and beat up people that smoked dope and did stuff like that.. Oh well
