It seems to me like it would still be worth meeting the person. And perhaps, in spite of your cynicism, you think so, too... Seeing as you still have a fish.
This is actually just an excerpt from a book I'm reading right now. The situation is that the local newspaper where this guy lives printed an add for a suicide helpline, but they printed his number instead of the right number. But he didn't notify the newspaper. He's just taking calls from suicidal people. He keeps taking calls because he takes this as a way to play God and he enjoys it. He feels that he now has the ability to decide who lives and who dies. Sometimes he'll convince people to kill themselves (and he'll actually hear the gunshot over the phone) and sometimes he doesn't. He also uses it as a way to meet young, vulnerable girls.
I just really liked this chapter and its implications. The idea of playing God using a suicide hotline is genius in my opinion, and although I would never even think of doing this, it does make for a very interesting story. The pessimism and cynicism is just delicious.
I've only just finished the second chapter and I already think this book is amazing.
