I've little experience of cars but, from years of hanging out with techies, I will suggest pushing the buttons in and out a few times interspersed with opening/closing doors (different doors) a few times in each position (broadly equivalent to the IT support cliche of 'have you tried turning it off and on again?', and similarly valid for lighting, according to OH, for whom it is a specialist area...)
If the light comes on sporadically, you probably have a loose connection somewhere. If it never comes on at all, you may have a blown bulb or fuse. Next steps here, if you can face them... (And, yes, that guide also refers to a middle position...)
Pushing buttons in and out results in either always on or always off, with no occasional activity: they definitely do work, just not the way that they used to!
The only think I've found from looking online is reference to a switch inside the door frame that actually control the on-when-doors-open thing. It's apparently easily damaged by trapping a seatbelt in the closing door, which the CRV is prone to due to a seatbelt fault. However, this doesn't explain it failing to work for both front doors at once....
