Last Saturday, my daughter and her boyfriend (both age 16) attended the junior prom. If you're interested, you can see a variety of pictures here. She had been building up to it for weeks.

How wonderful that it turned out so perfectly! She's gorgeous and looks really happy.
[caution: I can't resist a bit of politics] "Prom" is one of those bits of heterosexual privilege that tends to go unnoticed except by those who don't have the privilege. In many schools these days, same sex couples are beginning to be seen at proms. In many schools, they are not. Nonetheless, I can comment on how unfortunate it is that the essence of it -- getting all dressed up, anticipating, having fun with friends -- is unavailable to some, but I can still be completely delighted when it all works out for folks as great as you and your daughter.

I forgot to ask her about same-sex couples there. I know there were lots of people who went as singles, which in my day simply Wasn't Done. There's a pretty high level of acceptance of gays/lesbians at her school, so I hope some couples felt comfortable enough to go.

She tells me that there was at least one same-sex couple at the prom (a lesbian pair, one in a tux and the other in a dress). She said it's likely there were others, but given the hundreds of kids and her focus on a certain guy, she didn't notice. :-)
