Rewatch Extra: 1x16 E.B.E.

This is one of those episodes that seems really long and meandering, but in a good way. As it went on, I kept thinking, Oh! THIS is in this episode! And this, too!

There’s a Prairie Home Companion-style commercial for “Goody’s Headache Powder” on the truck radio. “When the night’s been too long and the party’s been too hardy, Goody’s Headache Powder ( Read more... )

too bad Twop got so lame, and it isn't ten years ago...you could have had a recap writing career! ;)

LOVE the addition of screen caps, even if they are linked. :)

Oh, this is completely accurately tragically Southern, believe me. At least it was in 1993, and it may still be. *g*

The accents are fabulous and wrong beyond the telling of it.

I need a Southern icon, but it's sort of a hard way to convey a drawl. I will settle for Kenneth. :-)

I can't decide whether that's horrifying or awesome. Probably awesome. I think Goody's must be the down-home equivalent of Head On. (Apply directly to the forehead, Head On.)

Where did Mulder get all that fancy equipment? He must keep it wherever he keeps his spray paint.

IN HIS PANTS. (Sorry, I'm just so desperate for Mulder to come back that it's making me a little crazy.)

Mulder and Scully ride a bus!

I kind of love this.

And then, of course, he squats down and pulls her hand toward him to look at the bug.

And I definitely love this.

She tells Mulder: “Mulder, you’re the only one I trust.”

Apparently I love everything in this episode? Mulder and Scully talking about how they only trust each other is one of my favourite things ever.

Sadly, her trench coat has an ugly gold chain across the back.

I am making a horrified face.

He says they’re using him against himself. Now, though, that’s more difficult with Scully at his side. If she hadn’t been there to question the authenticity of the photo, he would’ve been down to Georgia in a heartbeat and off on the wild goose chase they wanted, instead of on the right path. And that is why they are perfect together. Because SHE MAKES HIM A WHOLE PERSON ( ... )

Apparently I love everything in this episode?

There are approximately one million awesome things in this episode, so it's easy to see why. You should definitely put it on your "to watch" list when you make it through.

And I love that you included caps! Yay!

I'm trying to be better about this, because I think they improve things immeasurably.

You mean IF I make it through. Thinking about what I have to sit through to get to "Per Manum" is making me feel faint.

No no no, YOU CAN DO IT. I made it through, and I'm a delicate little flower when it comes to these things.

I have so much love for E.B.E. It's one of my absolute favorite early mytharc episodes.

Take a moment for the first appearance of The Lone Gunmen. The close up shot of Frohike's clicking camera is kind of the best introduction ever. The line “Old dude now, but yeah” never fails to crack me up. And, of course, Frohike’s “She’s hot” and the emphatic addendum, “She IS hot” after she goes through her spiel about the government’s ineptitude.
GUNMEN. I love them SO much, and miss them even more. SIGH. People rarely seem to think or talk about it, but they're more than a little miraculous (in terms of casting) themselves. Tom Braidwood is an AD, yet he works perfectly with all the actors. Dean is a great comedian, and Byers... oh, Byers. I just love them all so much. (Also: "Settle down, Frohike." HEEEEE.)

NOTE. Scully is sitting at a DESK. Ahem, Morgan and Wong, you wrote this episode.
Don't even get me started on Morgan & Wong after they came back (and the fandom), and all the hoopla about that goddamn desk. Just... don't.

and Byers... oh, Byers
I think I might love Byers the most, just because he's so clean-cut, straight arrow, always wearing a suit. He's just such an unlikely conspiracy theorist, it tickles me.

Don't even get me started on Morgan & Wong after they came back (and the fandom), and all the hoopla about that goddamn desk. Just... don't.
It's just SO DUMB, because...there's a desk there! There should never have been any hoopla in the first place!

BEST. EVER. The delivery is so casual, but he's totally serious! He's not even looking at her! If she wanted, she could totally get a nice view of his ass! ...What?
Oh, exactly! Like it sounds like one of his little flirty remarks, but he's not joking.

You feel the urgency and frustration not just through him, but how we're introduced to and carried through his frantic searching.
My favorite moment is when he's sliding underneath his table, looking beneath it. More than anything else in that scene, it just gives this feeling of desperation to find the thing that's been invading his home.

Byers is freaking adorable. I love them all though, for different reasons. Byers is the closest to "normal" though, that is true. He's the main reason I love Unusual Suspects so damn much.

It's just SO DUMB, because...there's a desk there! There should never have been any hoopla in the first place!
It's one of those things about the Fandom of Old that both annoys me and cracks me the hell up. This group of mostly female fans apparently got all uppity about it and started a campaign or something. Now, I love Scully, but I swear... every time a fan gets her panties in a bunch over Scully being "repressed" or some such thing, they're undermining Scully's character. Do they not see that?

More than anything else in that scene, it just gives this feeling of desperation to find the thing that's been invading his home.Yes, exactly! I always feel crazy uncomfortable, on Mulder's behalf, any time the sanctity of his apartment is breached. E.B.E., Pine Bluff Variant, Milagro. I adore his apartment and something about it is just so homey... I ( ... )

Hello! I hope this isn't too far out of left field, but I've seen you posting in meatfight's journal and followed you back to read some of your season 8 & 9 "explorations." I love that you're going through some other episodes now (you deserve it!). Anyway, can we be friends?

continuing to put our legs up on our desks once we reached college would cause people to say, scandalized, “Look at that Catholic school girl.”
Because only Catholic school girls put their legs up on desks?! Now I'm picturing Mulder in a Catholic school girl uniform. Ah! Although, seriously, I wish they'd had to dress up in costumes just a little bit more during the series run.

Mulder and Scully ride a bus! See, they tried to do their part to keep expenses down.Ha! Aren't they just riding the shuttle from the rental car return to the airport ( ... )

Friends!

Because only Catholic school girls put their legs up on desks?!
I'm guessing it had something to do with the skirts, since everyone did this thing where you hook one leg up on the top of the desk you're sitting at, while wearing a skirt. So maybe she thought we would wear skirts at college and forget we didn't have boxers on underneath?

Rejected lines: "Shark fin is considered an aphrodisiac in many cultures. Sex your partner."
Hee. I wish. (Don't we all.)

Doesn't she buy one set with her card and then pay cash for the real one? Thus leaving a false paper trail?
I think you're right and it just got lost in my notes. She finishes buying her real ticket and then buys, I think, a one-way with cash. (ETA: Or maybe vice versa. I'm too lazy to check.)
