We're told that one of the beginning stages to the preparation for invasion will be the declaration of martial law. If there was a major outbreak of random homicides, it would 1) cut down on the populous, and 2) make the remainder a bit more accepting of government control. Also, I feel this technology could have applications against other countries if the implementation could be taken care of. Ultimately, I'd say this was definitely supposed to be a trial run thing, like the tests in Blood or the gas they were prepared to release in The Unusual Suspects.
Is X involved in Blood? I find it interesting that he is present in pretty much every episode about government mind control. Deep Throat was more about the aliens. I wonder if X was specifically assigned to the mind control division or something.
The Mulder and Scully stuff in this episode is great. I may just pop it in right now while I have some lunch.
I definitely get the feeling it's a trial run for something, but it's frustrating that it's so ill-explained. I like the idea that it would just be a way to wreak havoc, but I still think the mechanism (tapping into a person's greatest fear) sounds fairly impossible.
But you're right, the Mulder and Scully stuff is so great. I hope you watched those scenes with lunch!
Scully dismantling the motel room is still one of my favorite things ever because it fills me with jealousy. I have no idea why it's such an appealing idea to me to take apart a motel room, but there you go.
It is probably best that I don't travel much... *g*
I loved Wetwired at face value, but it also helped spawn my favorite RivkaT story, Shibboleth. Ooh.
I wish he had other things in common with Mulder; like romantically lifting up crime scene tape, or wearing button down shirts with rolled up sleeves, YUM!
Whenever I see this scene She's so pretty there! And actually, in most of this episode, as I recall.
Mulder, lounging on her couch, head propped up with his hand, wearing an undershirt. This is one of the greatest scenes ever. It's right up there with this one. He looks delicious!
“Scully, you are the ONLY one I trust.” This is quite possibly my favourite line in the entire series.
Maybe they were just preliminary tests? That's what I'm thinking? But I'm not sure.
Because even though we know that Mulder isn’t betraying her, you start to feel like…well, maybe. The construction of the entire plot here is pretty brilliant, really. The scene that always sticks out to me is Scully dismantling the motel room, because we've seen Mulder do the exact same thing in the past (i.e. in E.B.E.), but this time WE know that the paranoia isn't (quite) founded, so it's even scarier.
Mulder, lounging on her couch, head propped up with his hand, wearing an undershirt. GUH. How can she resist? Seriously, he is, like, offering himself to you, Scully. Wait, here's one more chance! Take it! I always want to watch this entire scene in slow-mo, because... um, YEAH. WANT. To a ridiculous degree. Why can't that be on MY couch, right now? ...Please?
Their conversation about TV violence causing actual violence manages to be subtle, interesting, and open-ended.Which is one of the amazing things not only about this episode, but about this SHOW. They're performing social commentary about their own MEDIUM right there, yet it

And Sheila Larken manages, somehow, to do it in the exact same way as Gillian. She's great, isn't she? The freaky part is, I'm told GA's real mother looks alarmingly like her.
This is seriously heavy stuff, because even though it’s the signal bringing it out, at least the seed of these fears has to be somewhere, deep down, in Scully. Gah, I know. It's scary, isn't it? But it's done so damn well. It makes perfect character sense. This episode is just one one-two punch after another, isn't it? And it's part MotW, part mytharc! Genius!
They want to trust each other perfectly. Give them time, they'll get there! I love that, too. It's the biggest part of their journey, I think. That's why, when I listed all the things in XF that are important (that are also important to me) in that "why I love XF" post I did, trust came last and most significantly.
“Scully, you are the ONLY one I trust.” Another echo of E.B.E.! Perfect. I love how he delivers that line like there's no one else in the room.
But I get the sense that she knows his heart’
