LiveJournal: Why We Oppose SOPA and PIPA

Jan 17, 2012 17:09

Since 1999, LiveJournal has been a safe harbor of self-expression and creativity, with the most substantial privacy policies of any social site. We believe the Internet must remain a place that is free to use, free to explore, and free to express.

This is why LiveJournal ardently opposes the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and the Protect ( Read more... )

Okay, I've called my rep and signed petitions. Can you PLEASE let people access things under cuts without coming to this page again?

No kidding! I am confused. I am seeing comments on entries but when I try to see the comments or leave one, I can't ever see them. I assumed after I read this page and did what I was told (inappropriate if you think about it), I would be able to see the comments and what was under the cut. WTF. How are others able to leave comments or see under cuts?

Exactly. STOP letting people post if you're going to do this. Just black it out for the day.

Are you referring to commenting in ONTD? If so, that is related to the blackout that ONTD is doing today -- you are still seeing entries come up on your Friends page, but since ONTD is doing a blackout, you'll get taken to the black page and then to this post when you try to click on those commenting links.

This behavior should end around 5:00 pm Pacific time today, as that's when ONTD is planning to end the blackout.

Amazing! Thanks for participating in the protest! I was worried you wouldn't. My journal was the first thing I 'darkened' for the anti-SOPA and anti-PIPA protest. I think that even though like Google, you guys aren't going blackout, you're spreading information about the protest today, which is just as important!

The US government wants to rule the world! Well they already do... But they want to rule it even more! The Universe and humanity work because of development, and development is possible only because of freedom! SOPA and PIPA are the enemies of freedom!
By the way, for non-Spanish speaking, you SOPA is soup, and PIPA is smoking pipe. That's exactly what they are doing with the world. Imagine planet earth sitting sick, eating soup, and alienated by smoking cigars and weeds...

I live in Canada, and I happen to agree.

For a country that supposedly values free speech, they sure don't act like it.

I wonder what they think that they'll accomplish with this (Besides a mass migration to site hosting outside of the country).
Since if it passes, I can foresee people moving their site hosting to other countries to bypass the ruling.

Really, how the #*!! do they expect to enforce this? They seem to forget that the internet isn't only in the US. If this is passed, people WILL find a way around it.

(Sorry if this double posted, my internet is acting up.)

Even if you move your site to other countries, under this law they can still shut it down. Any website that is accessible by a person in the US is subject to this law and can be struck down under some weird law system. That's why it's so dangerous. If a US site is accessed and someone files copyright infringement paperwork, the site gets shut down. If a site is accessed by someone in the US and the site is based in Europe, if the person that accesses it files copyright infringement paperwork, the site is shut down because of the legal proceedings. People like us...if a government gives us the option to either go to court or shut down the site...most of us would have to go "you win" and shut down the site. Even in other countries! This is one of the many reasons this is so bad.

Self Censored for Language *Insert creative cussing and swearing here*

Ahem... pardon me. I normally don't swear, but, F***. I finally got a working link to the law, and you're right. They made the thing far to vague and open ended. I'm not versed in legalese, but... really? This is the crap people come up with these days?

How much do you want to bet that this is being sponsored behind the scenes by a company that couldn't get their way within the current legal system?

If this passes, a lot of people are going to be pissed off... Me included... In theory, all it would take is a couple of A$$***** to get every social network shut down... Not just LiveJournal, but Facebook, Youtube, even art sites like DeviantArt....

No one should be above the law, but this sets a very dangerous precedent. This is a step backwards for free-speech, if this passes. I mean really, how long until the US starts up the Idea police after this? It's a steep slope.

I hope that they're smart enough to take a step back and realize how dangerous this law is

Hello ...
I am a member of the LJ community ... It's actually a point where I could express my mind freely and always within the margin of respect ... This legislation will be approved in the U.S., but I am a Latin American ... and eventhough it can not intervene ... I just want to say that the Internet connects the world that we are a community not only in a planet if this width with the internet not that we are together ... LJ other sites are meeting space for free expression and thought, we know all the problems that have occurred by copyright, but one thing I learned from my country, is that vague laws can lead to major problems of seeking to solve ... I am anti SOPA and PIPA, I object, that the world is deprived of a free speech and thought ...

But if you violate copyright and you live in a country that is willing to hand you over to be prosecuted in America you are just as screwed as US citizens.

This is not just about America and Americans. This affect all of us!

Exactly, I agree ... maybe my English is not the best ... But I agree with you ... This is not America or America, believe me I roamed for such treatment. this is the internet as a global community. LJ is a point where they can express, be free to think and create and therefore I DO NOT AGREE WITH THESE LAWS ..
