is there anything that is ever really new? We are merely building upon what came before us. Think about it for a moment, by using words you are employing the paradigm and structure of those who have existed before you. Language and words are the foundation that we use to make 'new' things. To be truly new you would have to break free from the confinement of words (but then of course E. E. Cummings already has attacked that threshold of expression.) Using photography as a form of expression cannot be truly innovative sinse it relies on already existing structures. If you view it from a different angle it may be different but you have not made something new. If you paint real-life or employ a method like cubism you are grounded in the past and what already existed. Truly abstract art is a subject which has already been approached so it's out of the question too. A truly dynamic departure from all established things is necessary. The problem with that is that we are creatures of objects. The entire scope of the human mind is aimed at ( ... )

As long as that which you create or posit is entirely new and separte from your own experience then you can bask in the joy of creation without care as to the true originality of said work. Perhaps this is the blissful side of ignorance. The idea of innovation implies to me some desire for recognition. I don't think that is any way to be happy even if you are successful (but what do I know I'm just a philosophy major. =P)

by innovation im not necessarily imply recognition so much as improving on methods... is there anything left to break away from? i was just thinking of this when i was painting earlier... the romantics and realists and impressionists broke away from the old masters.... walt whitman and emily dickinson broke away from the european romantics... what is there left to break away from ... except for the recent patriotic uprise after 9/11...is there anything more broad? its not even that i care to or want to... i just want to know
