The Stupid Gets More Stupid

I'm watching the 20/20 episode talking about the 13 year old kid and his dad who scaled Everest successfully. When asked if he thought it was irresponsible to let a 13 year old child climb Everest, especially as the weather got worse and worse during the climb, the dad said that it was more irresponsible to take a kid to a fast food joint for ( Read more... )

Hopefully I won't get totally nailed for this, but I kind of agree about the fast food thing. Yes, his quote is total hyperbole. However, I would rather my child learn to mountain climb than eat fast food. Seriously.

No nailing LOL. I will say I think learning how to climb a mountain is better than fast food, but Everest? At 13? aiyiyi!

This kid is pretty good though, he's supposedly scaled all 7 of the highest peaks in the world now. Maybe he's some rare breed of 13 year old who's just so much more mature than most 13 years olds.

While I think the dangers of fast food compared to scaling Mt. Everest as an 11 yr old is blown a bit out of proportion, I absolutely love the analogy. We totally minimize the fatalities of obesity and the injustice some parents serve their children by the food they give them on a regular basis. When you start comparing the fat and calorie contents of a typical fast food meal and then think that some parents consider this a standard meal, it is an absolute tragedy. We go so little that when my kids get a happy meal, they think this wonderful nice lady just gave them a gift out of the goodness of her heart. LOL.

LOL I was thinking about this the other day - my parents rarely ever took us out for dinner. B-fast, lunch and dinner was always home cooked. Always. It was the rare occasion that we stopped at McD's or Pizza Hut. And now as an adult, it's our go-to place when we're too lazy to cook or clean up the kitchen (which is why I have diabetes and got to 215 pounds, all my fault).

I just think it's not the best analogy - Mount Everest is such a deadly place. But like I told Julieo, the kids is a really good climber. I just think 13 is too young for climbing a mountain that is notorious for its deaths.

Oh, I agree. If I had to choose between the two, McD's would win hands down. You have no business taking your young child there. One trip to Mt. Everest has got to have more potential to be deadly than one trip to McD's. But I still love the analogy, faulty or not. LOL. (And I agree it is def faulty).

I try very hard not to think about things like this because it just makes me sick to my stomach. My heart aches for these children.
