Well, I figure "the flu" is used for any unidentified virus other than the cold

Hmm I guess I only describe something as being related to the flu if it involves general muscle soreness, a fever, and a sense of nausea. I had none of those, and therefore think I more appropriately had "soft consumption". Or, "soft tuberculosis" if you prefer the more modern but less striking term.
