#2 is usual starter fare for any Chinese banquet. It'll probably include jellyfish though, just warning you. (SO YUMMY!)

The rest are standard fare but not really special CNY food?

Like, usually, we wouldn't have #1 for CNY, because the word "melon" in Chinese sounds like Cantonese slang for "death." But it tastes good though, tell your friends that. Assorted meats will include pork though, so warn your Jewish friends.

#7 is like short beef ribs, and not slices beef as they claim.

#5 looks really good.

I think $268 is a bit much though (considering the things they are serving; seriously, for $268, they should be bringing out the shark's fin and abalone and more seafood and at least a roasted baby pig), but I don't know, it seems okay.

Trust me, you do NOT want to know what the traditional CNY foods are. Two words: hair fungus.

ETA: I think the stuff on the menu will be yummy! (But not as yummy as the stuff in Vancouver, because face it, Vancouver has the best Chinese food in all of North America) So go for it!

hmm. jellyfish you say? I shall have to try that.

having now googled "winter melon soup," I super duper can't wait to try it! and possibly get some seeds and grow some myself this summer!

I was a little surprised by the lack of roast pig on the menu, but the family who owns the restaurant seem to be from northern China (they often have specials that seem very inspired by Korean food), so maybe pig is slightly less of a big thing where they're from? and sadly, $268 for 10 people is a really good price for a holiday menu around here - most of the tasting menus for Christmas Eve/NYE this year were between $40-$70 a person, not including alcohol.

(I have never had Vancouver's Chinese food, but I do miss the heck out of NYC's Chinatown. we have some great Thai and Chinese around here, but nothing like what we used to get in the city.)

Jellyfish is good if you can get used to the texture and the fact that it's jellyfish. Since you mention that the owners are from northern China, you might also get Chinese ham and other Chinese cold cuts, I think. Maybe drunken chicken, if they're from the Beijing/Shanghai region (though from the Korean influence, I'm guessing from somewhere even more up north).

Winter melon soup is AWESOME for the summer because it's supposed to lower your internal heat. And super easy to make!

Now I'm hungry. THANKS TWIN.
