After the Year of Living Dangerously

The Doctor’s mind works fast. Advanced calculations that the best mathematicians on Mars have devoted years of their lives to solving? He can solve it in thirty minutes, just hand him a calculator. In serious danger? He can think of at least two escape routes in the time it take a normal person to realize they’re ( Read more... )

Beautiful, and very poignant. Respectful of what was lost, but forward-looking, too. Nice work.

I loved this. Fascinating look at a reckless pair and their devil-may-care lives, until the day it all fell apart and they had to face the reality of where their laughing, careless approach to danger got them.

“We were stupid, weren’t we?”

“Yes,” he meets her eyes, “We were.”

“Are we being less stupid now?”

The Doctor smiles softly. “I hope so.”Truth hurts, but I'm glad they've realised it ( ... )

Oh, yay! Long review! Those are always fun.

Rose's reaction to reporting her mum dead was so dead-on Rose, and yet later she didn't want to correct the misconception about either of them.

I'm glad to hear you liked that; it was the one part that I was worried about while writing.

Is this a one-off?

Welllll, that's an interesting question, actually. I had originally ended it with the Doctor and Rose meeting Martha and inviting her to come travel with them, but then "Smith and Jones" premiered and the Martha I had written didn't match the real Martha at all, so I deleted the end. By the time I started writing again, it was less a question of continuing it and more of a "I need to finish this before it haunts me for the rest of my life" issue.

I want to continue it, but as I am The Slowest Fic Writer Ever, I won't make any promises.

Thank you so much for reviewing!

Thank you! I'm not sure if there will be more. I'd love to write a sequel, but I'm such a slow writer that I'll just leave it as a "maybe" for now.

I liked this very much indeed. I always enjoy stories where he grows up in Rose's company and they have to renegotiate their relationship. Happy endings are never completely happy; they are complicated things, and the subtlety of your writing really respects that. Your dialogue shows the many ways the power balance in their relationship is shifting as she realises he's not infallible. I do hope you write more in the same vein.

Thank you for such a nice review. Watch this space for more, I suppose.
