One of our cats, Ellis went missing yesterday (29th) afternoon after the bumbling mailman left our enclosed porch door open. The cat hasn't yet returned

I think the posters are a great idea. Even if they don't work, your kids can feel like they're doing SOMETHING. If they do work, all the better.
When our cat went missing, he was away about two weeks before he came back. When they're outside, they're frightened and probably won't come to calling. Heck, cats don't come when they're called when they're feeling safe! Better to hang out and watch. If you can sleep with your windows open, do. Ours came back in the middle of the night and yowled or I never would have found him, I bet. Even when we went out to look for him, he was skittish of us and we had to approach VERY slowly. This is a cat who knows us from kittenhood and is very sweet, usually. DON'T approach quickly.
I hope you have him home with you soon. It is so sad.
Thanks for the article, and your kind thoughts. Oddly, Ellis is the only one of the three who will come when called. Especially if I'm shaking his treat canister which we did Thurs and Fri. His brothers miss him terribly and meowed all through last night. They're meowing now as well.
Angel would come to his name in the house. He didn't from outside. I think he was terrified and cat instinct to mistrust everything kicks in when they're frightened.
I hope that one of the tactics from the article works.
oh, dear. well, yes. posters, a good idea, especially for the kids to do. if he got chased off he may take a little time coming back. if hair is there, it's probably just left from the cat fight, since in the area you live in, it's unlikely you have anything else. since he's an indoor cat, he is probably, as you say, disorientated and scared, so you just do what you can, when you can

I'm considering putting one of his brothers in a carrier out on the front sidewalk (ours directly in front of our house, not the one parallel to the road) for a few hours (not all at once) supervised, of course. The problem is, the other two; Baldar and Grey Baby are on the skittish side. I may be able to snag Baldar, and since he's the more vocal of the two, Ellis might hear him better.
I might stick a pair of Mark's dirty socks or shirt out there as well like the article suggests.
I'll go ahead with the posters, maybe we can take them around tomorrow since it'll be Saturday and all, more likely to find neighbors in their yards as long as the weather holds out. Oh, and I can make color copies at home. :-)
oh, yes, i know about the copies, but it makes less wear and tear on the inject/ribbons, donchaknow! :-)
and, also, keep in mind, SMALL spaces. cats are agile creatures, even when they're plump and a little clumpsy. when people come to visit me here, my cat hides IN the house and isn't seen for a day and a half- and i still have no idea where she goes!
Front porch door was open. We had the others open as well for ventilation, but the porch door was closed for that reason.
YES! They've been coming down now for a while. Cranky, poopy ol' Mark had a change of heart. I don't know why, don't want to know, just glad the kitties can be downstairs again. Well, except for Ellis escaping.
