Looking Back...

__________

With two and a half weeks left before school and the threat of becoming insanely busy looming ever nearer, I thought I would write a recap of the summer.

I spent the month of May reading Atlas Shrugged, figuring out my major, and searching for a job of some relevance to my future career.  Happily, I succeeded in all three…I ( Read more... )

Ooh, so you're a legacy objectivist! I'm envious.

Strange how I've never heard of your dad. Is he still active in the media?

I have some tapes by him that I bought from Second Renaissance books in 1992. One interviewed Edith Packer and the other Ayn Rand herself. I wonder if they still sell them.

I'm not sure business has that reputation. Most real business people I talk to think that the classes are a joke.

Kira - do you have contacts in the corporate world (assuming you want to keep that door open)? If you have contacts that like you enough, your major doesn't seem to matter.

A minor in a subject, btw, is usually enough to get you into graduate school, so that you could hedge your bets by choosing a practical major. But connections matter a lot more than your major (which is why a lot of people fight over unpaid internships).

I don't really have contacts in the corporate world as of yet, but I'm hoping to continue with internships and use my work experience as a means of securing other jobs. I probably would have majored in journalism if it had been available, but I settled on the two minors as a replacement. I know this may not be the safest route but I think the philosophy major will give me background knowledge that will be useful for my writing later.

My second piece of advice regarding college is about the social aspect. As that wise sage and observer of the human condition South Park says, "There's a time and a place for everything, and it's called college."

This is your time to do crazy stuff. Push your boundaries, and have fun. If you don't, you'll regret it later.
