A new beginning, or an excuse for a new end?

Well here is my latest idea for revitalizing this dead old thing- we'll see how long it lasts. This is actually something I've been toying around with for awhile, but am just now getting around to. For the foreseeable future, this blog will be dedicated to posting lists. These lists may pertain to pop culture, to "serious art", to philosophy, ( Read more... )

I liked Gladiator and A Beautiful Mind when they came out... But I grew to detest A Beautiful Mind as you do, and more recently (say, 11th grade?) I realized Gladiator was really hackneyed. But if you think it's a poor man's Braveheart, watch The Patriot.

I love you buddy, but was always puzzled by your affection for A Beautiful Mind.

Hey, I want to talk to you via any medium possible. Sometimes we're really bad at staying in contact. ):

Haha, yes. I mean, I saw ABM in 2001 or so, so forgive me. ;) That reminds me though - I find your passion for Being There curious. I mean, I liked it and all, but I'm totally not seeing why you love it so much.

I've been meaning to email since um...late July. But I've been busy, yes, with schoolwork. Yes, that's it. I'll get around to it shortly.

I love it because it maintains the perfect tone throughout the movie: I would describe it as the most deadpan movie I have ever seen. Hal Ashby, the director, was great at making clean, cold films, and this is his most dry work. He never so much as winks at the audience, despite increasingly ludicrous situations. Alongside this, Peter Sellers gives what I would call the most perfect acting job of all time. This adds up to a highly effective social satire that is bizarre, sometimes alienating, but surprisingly moving and beautiful.

You should watch it again. (:
