QUESTION -- translations

Feb 05, 2009 19:42

Has anyone had any experience with or know anything about this site:

http://language123.com/

I just wonder if it's worth becoming a member (139$ a year) because that's the only way to be able to submit proposals, estimates, for different translation jobs.

I don't know, but I will ask a friend to take a look if you make this post visible to the public. She does a lot of translation work.

I've never heard of them, Heather, but that doesn't mean they're not legitimate. Unless they're professional associations I always shy away from sites that offer work and want you to pay them. But that's me.

Yeah, I tend to agree. Any place that asks for money with the promise that you can make money is suspect. I wouldn't join unless you know for sure that it is someplace serious.

There are a ton of places, like http://wordreference.com/ where you can get help without paying anything. Don't pay anything unless you are completely sure.

Me too... I'm very "desconfiada" when it comes to services like these!

How about Elance? It is much cheaper and they do have translation jobs (as well as graphic design and other kinds of jobs).

It's a tough call. For a while I got a lot of work on elance, now I get nothing - it's too competitive I guess. There are like 30 proposals for every one I respond to. But I did make money there for a while.

I got one (1) good, solid client off proz.com - The cool thing about proz.com is that it offers more than just job offers for their fee, which I think is only €70 or so per year. I enjoy that site, including its forums and glossaries and I have found translators for work I needed - careful though, I got totally scammed on there once.

I got absolutely zero (0) zilch from translatorpub.com, which cost less and I responded to many offers but never got any response. Everyone low balls their offers, too.

This one is more expensive than any of them...so I guess I wouldn't do it unless a friend recommended it from experience and said they got a lot out of it.

PS I'm the friend of traballenguas above.

THanks so much for your input!!
I do know the site proz.com, as I have found help on their forums often... as well as wordreference.com.

I am definitely not convinced about this 123language site... but I *am* going to look into proz.com some more, as I hadn't realized it was possible to find jobs there.

Thanks again!
