I have read, I have voted, I have been impressed. As always, the votes are still pretty close! Good luck to everyone! Can’t wait to see which of these amazing writers is our newest Idol!
There is reality (thank you for the facts), and then there is the perception of reality, which can be just as strong. I have had at least one conversation with you on this topic. One issue is whether any particular vote was affected at the top or the bottom but for the social media votes? Who gets to carry on is at least important as who wins any particular vote

It just occurred to me that there is a basic assumption built into the "1 social media vote" question that should be addressed. Because I think it's a basic, and classic, misunderstanding that a lot of people have when talking about "LJ vs non-LJ votes

I have managed without "other social media votes" until now (at least as far as I know, I certainly have not sought them out and I don't think anybody found me just for the fun of it) and would so have loved to carry this through to the end, but alas, that would have meant automatically eliminating myself

"But the mere fact of being asked to go there maybe put a little seed in my brain which this year, finally, took hold "
That's always my hope. Granted, I prefer if people join up a little sooner. :p
"but I also have learned some useful stuff this very last round."
Yeah, I hope that everyone who goes through the experience does. Some of it is going to be "good." And some of it is going to be "bad." But all of it is going to be true things about yourself that you can use at some point.
I will freely admit that I have had many conflicting thoughts about "outside" votes. There is a part of me that thinks of Idol and LJ as its own bubble, and that asking for votes inside that bubble (promoting yourself on LJ) was fine, while asking for votes outside that bubble (other social media) was not okay. I also had a little bit of an attitude regarding asking for votes in general, because I only did that once this season, and it didn't feel "fair" to me. My LJ friends are not active anymore, I don't use Facebook, and I only have a small handful of followers on Instagram. Basically, I can't count on outside votes

That was Fanfic Survivor, which was the ancestor of LJ Idol. I ran it in the early 2000s. (Back when I was writing fanfic.)
I think there were 7 contestants and it went well enough. But then again, there were only 7 people, so there's only so much drama to be had. :)
A lot of the ideas that eventually became Idol were born there.
