epic fantasy book
What is the series?? Reading this whole post without knowing which it was has driven me nuts, hah.

Do you have a membership at a conveniently located library? A decent library should have a ton of audiobooks on CD for borrowing!

Pffft, I didn't say, did I? XD It's the first book in the Stormlight series by Brandon Sanderson, The Way of Kings.

I do not have a library membership! I never got one when I moved south, though I don't have an easy means for listening to CDs anymore when I'm at home, besides the computer. It's a good idea anyway though, I should probably check out my local branch. XB

I had vaguely figured that it was something involving Sanderson, but the uncertainty was still AGONIZING, I tell you.

You would probably be able to rip the CDs to a format that you could put on your iPod/mp3 player/whatever; libraries (bless them) don't put any sort of copy protection on their media.

Tbh I didn't know anything about modern fantasy writers AT ALL before looking for something to listen to. I'd vaguely heard about some author who died without finishing his series, and that someone else had to finish it for him a few years ago, but never knew details. It wasn't until I was searching for books over 20 hours long in Audible's "epic fantasy" section that I found Sanderson, and then realized it was him finishing Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series that I'd heard about. (Though I haven't read that, either. :B)

That's true! I barely even think in terms of what you can do with CDs anymore, so I didn't even consider it. ^^;

Ahaha! A Song of Ice and Fire is like that. There was even an article in the New Yorker about how fans of that series harass the shit out of the author because they want him to finish it before he dies. XD;;; Then I read the books and now I'm in agony too. Sometimes I feel like it's better to wait until a series is done so then you can get through all of it without pause, but there's also something nice about reading something that's new and current and everyone is discussing it, y'know?

YES I always prefer to wait until everything's out before I start something, whether it's book series or tv shows or whatever. ^^; Though it's also pretty bad if you wait until there's a lot of something out, and binge on it, and then you have to start waiting like everyone else and it seems like that just makes it worse! XD That's kind of how it was with Harry Potter for me, but I did have a coworker I could talk to about the books at the time, and that was kind of fun, all the speculation. But I still like completed things if I can get them! :B

I hate discovering I've landed headfirst in an unfinished series, argh!!

I have a jillion hours worth of audiobooks thanks to a decade-long Audible subscription, including the audio versions of well-loved hard copies, and Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell is one of the best audio versions I've ever heard (multiple times.) And it's LONG. Divine.

I almost would've rather waited on this one, since it's not only unfinished, but only just barely started! Like, if I'd come in when there were 7 or 8 books out, maybe it wouldn't be as bad. u_u

I had a gift/trial Audible membership a few years ago, and used the credits it came with, but then never got a paid membership until recently. I just never thought of listening to books much until I started driving so much for work and found that it keeps me from wanting to murder Miami drivers, at least a little bit. Now though, I seem to want more and more books! I've read Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell, and have seen it said elsewhere that the audiobook is good, so maybe I'll check it out eventually. It's been a couple years since I read it, but I seem to remember that I had conflicted feelings about the book once I'd finished. Though a good audio version definitely helps!

*giggles* I just guessed you were probably talking about Brandon Sanderson's Way of Kings from the context of your post and was about to ask, but found the answer already in the comments. I started the book a while back, but I didn't actually finish it--I think my copy got lost somewhere in the moving stuff.

Is it good? I'm kinda leery about it because I still haven't finished Mistborn because I can't get into it--but I loved Elantris...

I'm actually taking a quick break from it at the moment, and listening to a shorter book. XD; Not that I don't want to finish it, but it's quite long, I know it'll leave me wanting the next volume, and I felt like it was time for more Terry Pratchett to switch things up. :B

But I hadn't heard of him until I went looking for books! I will probably get the Mistborn series next, and depending on how I feel about that, then Elantris. Though I don't know if I would've been able to read this book as it is, or if having the audio version helps me stay focused. Plus, then I don't have to figure out how to pronounce these weird names and places myself. XD;

have you considered something like podcastle or escapepod or some other of the many more free podcasts? They have great collecctions of mostly shorter ~20 min reads but also long ones and quickies. Maybe they could help tide you over a bit.

Right now the only podcast I listen to regularly is Welcome to Nightvale. I haven't gone looking for other ones though, so I'll check them out! :)
