Chapter 16: Midpoint
Chapter Summary:
Akanishi Kazumi continues on her journey to the hospice.
Pi told her the truth about Kame's condition.
The price Kame paid in exchange for Jin's future.

The hospice was located at the countryside and it was impossible to reach my destination within a day. Thus, I stopped over at a travelers lodge and spent a night there.
Hokkaido summers were a tad too chilly for me, and the nights were too quiet. When dusk fell, I could hear the cicadas chirping away.
Staying overnight at a lodge and waiting for dawn to arrive… Papa must have experienced many times too.
Sometimes I wondered, what was so unique about their love? Papa was willing to give up all potential work opportunities, just to travel here every weekend to spend just a night, or even an afternoon with Kamenashi. And what kind of love gave Kamenashi the courage to bear all the loneliness by himself until the day he breathed his last?
That night, Pi told me a lot of things.
“The doctors told Kame that he had five years more, if he was lucky. He didn’t want to be Jin’s burden, that was why he…”
“Kazumi, do you know that that was a very tough decision for Kame? Once he decided, he had to give up everything”.
Pi continued, “During the last stage when Kame was very ill, I asked him if he wanted to see Jin for the last time. Kame wanted to, but he knew he couldn’t. Jin was married and already had you. He was leading a peaceful life. Kame didn’t want to intrude into Jin’s life again”.
“Kame told me, ‘Just let it be…’. When he left this world, he had no one by his side…”
“Sometimes I wondered if I made the right choice by hiding everything from Jin through those years”, Pi said.
“I mean, Jin did return to the ‘correct path’ that everyone hoped for. But in exchange for that, Kame had to continue living the remaining bit of his life with both their loneliness, and eventually died in solitude…”
Chapter 16a: Yamashita
Pi is like kin to me even till today. He had been around since… forever.
Pi's love life was far more interesting than Papa’s; he always has a companion with him - be they guys or girls. ;)
But all the people he dated… they shared a similarity: gentle, and always with a shy smile.
Before this, I was always puzzled over Pi’s choice of companion, because they all seemed to resemble each other. Only until that night when he told me about his teenage days then I realized all of his ex/companions resembled Kamenashi.
Pretty soulful eyes, thin pouty lips, dimples, and the gaze…
I always assumed Pi to be a playboy, just like what the tabloids claimed. But actually, he had only one true love in his lifetime. Pi played on the field of relationships because he needed warmth and companionship.
I didn’t blame him on that; after all, he’s only human.
He wants to ‘love’, and needs to be loved too.
He used his playboy behaviour to conceal his true feelings from the public.
His true, but one-sided feelings for his only love.
“But Kazumi, I dote on you not for your name… I dote on you because Jin is my buddy, and I respect your mama”. Pi told me that night in the hospital.
The moon casted a warm glow on Pi. The glimmer at the corner of his eyes reminded me of the room that kept many secrets.

P/s: I cried and cried and cried when i read this in the original fic.
I can't imagine how painful it was if this ever truly happened to anyone. it's insane i think.
