Hey, check this out! New York's been attacked by a giant alien monster!Well, ok, that's not exactly news. But did I at least get your attention ( Read more... )

How do you know it's an alien?

And actually no, we don't know what it's been eating yet.

Excellent scientific question! Always ask for evidence! It's my hypothesis, see. First, it doesn't exactly look like anything from this planet, or even a distant cousin. Second, there are animals that could be as huge as maternus that we haven't discovered in the deepest parts of the ocean, but they wouldn't be able to surface and walk around on land. Thirdly, there is evidence of a big something crashing into the ocean nearby several months before the attack, though nobody made anything of it at the time. And finally, there's only one known individual of the species.

Hypothesis: Alien! It could still be some new undiscovered species, but who knows. We always need more data!

That's too bad. I've been watching it whenever I can, trying to find out.

I guess so, but I've seen monsters and creature that came from something else before too.

Something crashed into the ocean a few months before? I hadn't heard about that...then maybe it is from another world.

I think at least some people were trying to bring back a live crab.

Like I said, I don't really know for sure, but it's a good working hypothesis. No one knows for sure if anything really did fall, but there are some small things that indicate it could have happened - a tiny earthquake and waves recorded as coming higher than normal. It's not 100%, but it is at least plausible. Alien or not, it's pretty exciting to see a never-before-seen life-form, right?

Now that's interesting. I've been trying to do the same thing for weeks now. Any success?

Gargantua maternus works, I guess. No one seems to really have a name for her, per se. Come to think of it, I'm not even sure if it's female or not...

Wait. Wait, wait, wait, wait. Fun scientific facts? Hypothesis? Questions, anybody?

Bill Nye?

Hey, I used to watch your show when I was a kid. Some of your facts even saved my life a few times. Haha. What're the odds.

Then again, my name is Odd Thomas.

Well hey, glad I helped!

There's nothing odd about the usefulness of SCIENCE.

Detective Ema Skye, self-titled forensic scientist. She shares a common interest with you. Namely, science.

I do really really love science! And I love meeting fellow scientists in any field. Forensics an exciting specialty you know, all the DNA testing and fingerprinting with computers... wild stuff!

What if it's magical?

I really doubt that. Just because we don't understand it doesn't make it magic. I mean, people used to think lightning was magical, until we found out it was an atmospheric discharge of electricity.

What if you summon the lightning, wouldn't it be magical then?

That depends. If in summoning the lighting "magically" we observe the summoner very carefully, we might be able to explain how it happens. Or maybe we can't. Who knows!

Look, let me tell you, you do not want to get close to her. She can really mangle you... I feel sore just thinking about it.

Oh I don't want to get close to her, I just want some spit or sweat or... any other gross stuff that might have identifiable proteins in it!

That's.... disgusting... Have fun with that.

How could I, or anyone, not have fun with that?
