It's amazing how different your own perceptions can be from the truth. During the period of time after I quit grad school up through about the 2005 season, I was fine with my build, but I've heard from several people since that I was getting TOO thin.
I was watching Saturday morning cartoons this morning, and a public service announcement came on, telling young girls that eating 14 "of anything" in a day would make them gain weight, and to see a doctor before they diet.
Ah, but that's exactly why this ad is so good... an anorexic girl like the one in the foreground probably wouldn't look in the mirror and see a 350 lb. version of herself. The idea is that one of the main problems in anorexia is that it's never quite good enough, that when they're already really thin, they still look in the mirror and think, "Oh, if I could just lose a few more, I'd be thin enough." But it never is enough.
The self-perception of an anorexic is skewed, but not completely wacko-insane. That's a big part of what makes it so insidious and harmful.
This reminds me of something I've been meaning to make a ranting post about. There's a girl on LJ that I friended a while back because she did cute artwork, then her journal started changing and she's become blantly anorexic and bans anyone that makes a negative comment on her "dieting". It's like a train wreck and I'm always horribly tempted to peek in on her journal everytime she makes a post in a mutual LJ community.

Even in a public service announcement, they fuck up young girls' heads. Sheesh.

Hey, what weekend are you going to the AZ renfest? Can I maybe come along? I can kick in for gas, I have a drivers license, and I'm cute.

As for AZ, I don't think it would work out too well.
